Hello fellow gunnutz! From what I have been seeing in the news lately has me thinking it may be time to do some “long term rifle storage”…. Like really long.
My question is what is the best way to protect a rifle(s) for long term storage? Air tight cases? Soaked in a substance? Wrapped in a special material? How deep in the ground? Lol!
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Cosmoline seems to do pretty good. Stuff a piece of PVC pipe with it and insert said rifle. Screw on end cap and bury underground.......or whatever you have planned

I moved to BC from NS for a 5 year contract, I only brought 10 guns with me the majority of the collection is in a safe in my parents basement (dad has Rpal) the collection is mostly original lee metfords and lee enfields I sprayed them down with fluid film and wrapped them in shrinkwrap/cling wrap..it's been a year and a half and no issues yet.

There used to be a product from BSA called Safety Paste, intended for long term protection of rifle bores.
It works well and tubes of it can still be found at gun shows.
There may be some sort of currently produced equivalent, but I don't know what it is...

And maybe scatter some iron filings 'round the burial property, to through them off track!

I'd bury a few lengths of 1" pipe for that purpose, but doubt it would make any real difference if they really wanted to find something.

A pc of PCV piping with sealed end caps would make a good container.

The problem with that is that if they are going to take the time to sweep your place with metal detector, you are already in a "very bad place".
They could just switch over to using ground penetrating radar , or just dig up your back yard and smash up all your walls and basement AND charge you for the labour and cost as well !!!

Have a good friend rent a climate controlled storage locker and put a good gun safe in it. Just make sure you pay the monthly fee or youll end up on Storage wars YUUUP

Avoid anywhere moisture will come into contact with the metal, especially standing water. I cannot recommend burial or anything underground. Hydrostatic pressure is one of those unstoppable forces of nature.

I had occasion to empty an old shooter's house and garage for the estate. He had steel ammo boxes in a dry well in his garage. Anywhere there was humidity, the steel rusted. I had to haul pails of scrap live ammo to the nearest army base's amnesty boxes. Ammo stored in cabinets and dresser drawers survived beautifully. If the option permits, store your goods with a trusted friend.

Gpr isn't a really good tool where the ground has been virtually disturbed everywhere. Out in the boonies on untouched ground sure, but even on my acreage, I have poked holes everywhere with machinery over the years

I lightly applied Cosmoline rp-342, wrap them up with VCI paper then vacuumed wrap the whole rifle. It works great for 5 years at the storage facility without heating.
