Any tips for mods on pistols? Considering slide porting and possibly welding an accessory rail onto my frame. I am a fairly experienced welder but don’t want to wreck anything or make it dangerous. are there any big concerns with either?

Thanks!

Really , welding a rail on? No.
Now if it is a glock have at her.
I have worked on a few guns over the years that customers have fixed.

Why not just drill and tap on to frame instead?

The weight of the accessories is all on a few small surfaces. Bolts or screws do break. And the OP says he is an experienced welder.

As the supply of handguns is changing, whether to permanently modify a scarcening (if that's a word) resource might not be the wisest choice.

I'd be very wary of putting that much heat into a frame, even
with heat mitigation measures. There are grip panels available for some guns that extend forward and have a rail on them.

You don't mention the make and model.
Slide porting was common enough on early 1911 types. Recent production usually has an enlarged ejection port to begin with.

Welding on a frame? That is serious and not reversable. Lots of potential for a ruined frame. There are laser grips, etc.

screws are plenty strong, can even be pinned on top for rock solid fit

Hey everyone thanks for your input! I’m totally new to the concept of modifying firearms and most of what I find online for this is just “buy this part” and it seems like that is for a reason. I’ll likely abandon the idea of modifications outside of bolt on types. Especially like mentioned above with these becoming harder to come by. Might have to look at doing a custom stock for a small rifle to occupy my want to modify something.
