Field Stripping A Ruger Mark III – HELP

So I am trying for the first time to clean my Mark III hunter and I’m STUCK!

When I try and swing out the mainspring housing at the back of the grip it get stuck and moves only about a centimeter.

When I put the housing back in place and snap it shut the I can not #### the gun of move the safety. The bolt will only pull out half way and the safety will not move; it’s in the fire position. The

It’s basically stuck. I’m kind of panicking; please help.

This is as far back as I can pull the bolt.

The only thing that comes to mind right now is that your pistol is cocked, and you're fighting the mainspring pressure. The only way I was able to simulate part of your issue was to leave my 22/45 cocked and try to lift the mainspring lock. It stopped in the same position as yours. Does yours feel like it's being pushed out under spring pressure?

As for the bolt not cocking all the way, an internal part may have come out of position during your disassembly attempt. Again, on my 22/45 I was able to get this to happen by lifting the mainspring lock with the muzzle pointed down. Easy to correct, but I think you need to solve your mainspring lock issue first.

Unfortunately (?) I was not able to get these to happen at the same time on my Ruger.

It does not seem to be mainspring pressure. It's a sudden stop not a gradual thing. Man I am getting frustrated, been working on it for a over an hour with and still totally lost.

I just solved mine the second worst way.........I don't know how I did it  .

The worst way, of course, is breaking it :( . Bad, very bad.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Thinking back on this problem (the bolt and mainspring combo) I'm just gonna toss out some thoughts on what I observed with mine.

The mainspring (MS) housing would not swing out all the way and the bolt would go all the way back. When I tried closing the MS lock, there was "resistance". It did not freely drop into its slot. With the MS unlocked, I was able to fully #### the pistol, but it would not fire. I also noted resistance with the magazine on removal and insertion.

The only thing I can think of is through manipulation of the mag and the MS lever I was able to free up whatever the hell was stuck.

If this makes sense to you, great. I just reread it and confused the s**t outta myself. I'd edit it, but that might confuse me even more.

I am unable to fully #### the pistol period. I have tried with the MS totally closed and as open as I can get it. See pic.

I can freely inset a mag.

HA! I've done that before. The top of your main spring housing is stuck inside the open groove in the bolt by the hammer. Dump some oil into/on the mainspring housing (into the receiver part and all over) and wiggle it out. It's stuck with metal on metal contact, two unfitting edges binding together.

I have the same pistol but so far have not even attempted to strip it, have heard so many horror stories about tipping it up and then pointing the thing down so bits fall in to place I decided if and when it needs cleaning i'll remove the wood grips and plunge it into my ultra sonic cleaner.
A cheap cop out if ever there was one but it works well as long as you dry and lubricate it well after words.

That's exactly what happened to my 22/45.
Finally punched out the sear pivot pin, and was able to pull out the mainsping. In order to get that back, I removed the hammer assembly pin. Still working on getting it all back in the right place. :runaway:

Had that happen before..That little leg on the rear of the hammer is pushed up against the the mainspring unit.
I had to trip the disconnecter from the inside of the magwell as just pulling the trigger wouldn't let it move far enough.
Put the rear spring back in and trip the disconnecter with a flat head screwdriver through the magwell as much as you can and give it a good shake, that will give the hammer enough room to move forward an it should come loose.
That doesn't work pop out the sear pin

The first time it took me about an hour to get mine back together again. Also my MKIII hunter is easier than my blued MKIII Target.
Anyways this should help you. It helped me. Just follow the link and click on the pictures.

After you've stripped it about 8 times it goes pretty quick and easy. The first few times are a real pain.

Good luck
