Remington .223 twist rate

My best shooting rifle was for years my Remington 700 ADL in .223 Rem. that I bought in the early 90's. After 3500 rounds, the group size started opening up quite a bit, so I traded for a Remington 700 SPS Varmint. I thought the best load in the ADL would also shoot well in the SPS Varmint, but it doesn't. The 52 gr BTHP shot best in the ADL but that weight doesn't seem to work in the SPS. I tried heavier bullets but they didn't work well either. I'm wondering if they might have changed the rifling twist. The ADL load works well in my Tikka T-3 Lite, my Savage M-25 Walking Varminter, and my Sportco .223's. I've been told the twist in the 700 SPS is1 in 12 and the savage is 1 in 9. I haven't been able to verify these. I just loaded some 50 gr HP for the SPS, perhaps they will work better. I've been using IMR 4198 powder and tried many others that didn't work as well. Are there other powders that usually work well in .223?

H335 is always my go to for .223. 27gr under a 40 grain vmax is a tac driver in my Tikka 595 1-12 and same in my son's savage 1-9 twist. Had a ruger m77 that couldn't group them at all with 1-9. Can't explain why but both of the boys savages are 1/2" at 100 yards with the same load.

To the best of my knowledge Rem only built 223's in 1-12 and certain models in 1-9. 12 twist rifles typically handle up to 55 gr bullets well, sometimes up to 60, depends on the rifle itself. 9 twist will let you run up to 75 or so. Anything heavier than that will require a 7 or 7.5 twist. As for powders in the 223 case, I like H335 and BL (C) 2 as well. - dan

If you contact Gravel Agency with your serial # they can probably tell you what the twist is. I inquired about whether the trigger recall had been done on a used 700 I bought and they were able to give me complete details on the rifle. It was in an aftermarket stock with a mag conversion, so it was nice to know how it was set up when it left the factory.

OP,
4198 powder is toofast of burn rate in any 223/556 w/ any projectile.

4895 will shoot much better w/ any projectile weight...in a bolt gun.

With a cleaning rod/jag/patch....check your twist rate of said barrel.

Check your twist by pushing in your cleaning rod and measure how far it travels to make 1 revolution.

I have shot a lot of 222 Remington rifles over the years, but have owned and shot 3
Remingtons chambered in 223 Remington. All shot 50 & 55 grain bullets very well,
using W748 or BLC-2. These 223's were all 12" twist units. Dave.
