Update On Ontario Restricted Transfer Times

The days between application and transfer approval seem to be definitely slowing down and stretching out. When i got my latest approval Sept 2 it was from a transfer initiated On june 2 or about 90 days. By late Sept the time between submission and approvals was 128-130 days. Now the approvals seem tot be taking mid 130s, even though, by the chart, the latest days in June have far fewer applications than the early days.

ONtario Bus to private
Transfer initiated June 11 #59305**
Transfer issued Oct 23rd

A different transfer, Private to private. Initiated August 12, 59948** i received a PAPER LETTER in the MAIL from CFC askign for "More information". Called them today, helpful agent after getting the details needed, said he was sending it to CFO and that "ontario processing time is about 4 months" (but this is anecdotal)

Thanks for the info about Cabelas, I am also waiting on a wrangler (Ordered June 2nd but they didn't send it in until July 13th) 59321XX.
Interested to see how long they take to get it sent out, thanks, Jay!

I got an email back from Cabelas... Get ready for a laugh & insert FACEPALM...

"The CFC will not give me any information about your pending transfer due to the privacy act and they may want to talk to you. If you want to expedite the process you can give them a call. Your reference number is 59317**. The CFC phone number is 1-800-731-4000. Just tell them you are checking on the status of your transfer and give them that number.

It is really hard to actually talk to anyone at the CFO these days. As long as they have all your contact information they will contact you if they need anything."

My reply:

"Hello Ellen;

It's no longer a pending transfer. It's been completed & approved by the Ontario CFO.

In my previous email below to Teri, one of your colleagues, I included the completed Ontario CFO transfer approval document.

My understanding is that the CFO is not necessarily sending a copy of the completed transfer to the seller. Hence my sending along a copy to you folks at Cabelas.

Please find the CFO approval attached for your info.

Please send along shipping info when you have it.

Thanks.

Sincerely
Jay"

I called in today to Cabelas as well, Jay. They told me I can send in my side of the transfer but its useless, they have to wait for seller's transfer document to arrive...

And that's what I was trying to explain to them!

The CFO 'may not' send the seller a copy, so we could be stuck in "Purgatory"!

Sigh

59325XX approved today initiated on 6/8/22. Business to private.
**Edit- my purchase was from Cabela’s and the representative asked me to forward my email with the transfer document to cabelasfirearms@cabelas.ca. The representative said they would get their copy in a day or so then ship and told me to watch for the email with tracking.

RE CABELAS:

While it is definitely sad, I personally see a common sense and logic here...

The huge retailer is prone to compliance and reputational risks due to the volume being sold through their stores. As many people have access to Photoshop these days, their risks of getting a legit-looking copy and then ship is higher than at a small retail store. Sooner or later that may happen, or has happened so their procedures are strict...

Agreed 100%.

And I just got off the phone with the CFC, they confirmed that BOTH the seller & the buyer (little ol'me) were sent copies of the CFO approval.

So I wait for Cabelas to do their thing...

Yeah, both people get copies, when I dealt with a proper store they received a copy 24-48 hours after I got mine. I will also call and chase tomorrow to see if I get anywhere but it could be days until we get a shipping email. I wont get the paper copies in the mail for 2 weeks so hopefully, it arrives by then.

Well they will not have to deal with new transfer applications coming it, phone calls for private transfers etc. It is a sad irony that the freeze on transfers will actually speed up transfers.

It will no go faster. It’s the provincial CFO that approve, not Miramichi. The reduction in calls for transfer will change nothing to approval time. Sorry to piss on your parade.

Damn it's a new record, approval 2pm, cabelas canada post shipment notification 4pm, label created. I didnt know they use canada post for restricted and UPS for most other stuff

The downside is I forgot cabelas charges you after they ship... I have to pay for this pistol still! Thought I already paid haha

What was the “more information” they needed if you don’t mind me asking?

Cabelas just sent me an email confirmation the transfer was approved AND two email with tracking & the combo code to unlock the firearm when it arrives.

Yes I know this, but they will still not have new transfer applications coming from Miramichi to deal with, and they will have reduced calls from inquiring minds asking if they have a transfer number assigned etc. It only makes sense that at some levels there will be a reduced distraction load.

Yes Cabalas uses UPS for everything except guns where Canada post is the carrier. Got a Ruger PCC the other cay CPost.
Cabelas hads the dumbest set up for shipping. The only thing you hear from the after the sale is complete is from the shipping company. No where in your account can you see any record of shipping.

Wait times will continue to increase until the CFO hits a point in approvals where their transfer capacity exceeds the capacity of whatever day they happen to be working on. Which is likely not until maybe a week after the import ban took hold.

(Ex. if June 12 had 1000 transfers and the CFO can only process 200 per day, June 12 will take 5 days which stretches everyone after June 12 out)

Their daily rate has actually sped up quite a bit since June.
