While cleaning my SKS the other day, I noticed that a crack had formed on the bolt from the firing pin hole and down one side. Has this happened to anyone else?

I will probably get a new bolt requardless of any comments on here but I am curious to find out if firing the gun with this bolt would be dangerous? Should I replace it immediately before attemping to shoot the gun again or can I shoot the gun and replace the bolt when I get around to it??

Thanks for your comments.

I would seriously advise against it.Check local dealers for a replacement, then hurry up and wait.I believe its Marstar that has part/price lists for sks parts.Even if I'm wrong, better to err on the side of caution, there's no place to get replacement eyes and/or face that I know of...my .02

Your bolt is kaput. Don't fire your rifle. If it comes apart you may not only ruin your rifle but you or a spectator may get hurt. Safety first !

time to get a new one so tell me, how many rounds the bolt handled you figure? also what country made it?

sks bolt

districorp has a bolt listed on the website for 20 bucks specify russian or chinese, cheap fix if you ask me and as said above ill advised to fire unless you already have deformed facial features

Thanks for the opinions guys.

So...nobody has had this happen yet to their bolt?

Only about 1500 rounds . It's a Chinese Norinco so that might explain it!

Marstar has a replacement for $20.00. I'll be ordering ASAP.

I ordered one from marstar, it was in good shape, ask them for the yugo ones,I think thats all they had anyway.

That did not happen to mine but is interesting, never seen an sks bolt crack like that, what type of ammo were you shooting? reloads?

kbracey,
A buddy of mine bought a 1957 triangle 26 last year that had exactly the same crack. The dealer replaced it the bolt right away.
Replace the bolt before you shoot the gun again.

Cheers

I believe a shiny bolt that is not phosphate coated would indicate a real refurbed SKS and not a commercial Norinco....so who knows how many rounds the bolt has seen.
I bought one a while back that was really rough even for a refurb, it had a bent barrel so I didn't keep it but I forgot to check the factory code and SN before I did.
Cheers

How long it took to get your parts from Marstar? Been waiting for mine for more then a month

Cross your fingers because i do not think they update that site. I bought an SKS part from them last yr. and when I went and picked it up he told me it was the last one they had, and its still advertised on their site.

On a positive note, the part I purchased was in Great condition and he also threw in a front sight adjustment tool for free.

Change your bolt.

I had a M1 carbine bolt (yes different gun design) break up on me last year. The parts missed my head but not by much.

Hey Ken, maybe you should stick to rockets :p or maybe get a real gun (my M14 is in the mail from Marstar!) :D

Eric

Hey Eric, the Black Brant X Avatar looked familiar! I've given up the rockets for a while and switched to Guns for now. I was unable to get my level IV (my BBX disintegrated at Mach 1 during my attempt out east a few years back) so I figured I'd pour my money into guns instead. I've found out that both those hobbies cost way more than I can afford!!! :runaway:

Ain't that the truth! By the way, I wouldn't shoot that bolt.
