Will be in Texas next week. Hunting buddy wants to get a firearm for deer and has invited me to help him select a gun.He mentioned you can get good deals at pawn shops. Anybody have experience with this? This will be a standby gun as he already has one for deer. What to look for/avoid ...check out?

Having only bought older collectable 22s from pawn shops I'm certainly not an expert, but it sort of depends on the particular firearm you are interested in. A good for instance would be a Ruger mini 14. I have seen them for sale in pawn shops for more than the SRP for a new one. Now days I would look for used Ruger Americans, Savage Axis', or other entry level stuff and I would visit someplace like Walmart to see what the going rate for new rifles happens to be. Be well informed and beware. Remember pawn shops are in business to make money, just like
everyone else

Buddy sold a rifle for 3 grand once and found it for 700 bucks in the pawn shop when the guys wife divorced him a while later so he was up 2300 bucks and still had his rifle.

Pawn shop sales are seasonal. When there is a need, guys will get their guns out of hock. When the season is over or they need money, guns go into the pawn shop. What will you find depends entirely on the local community.

Years ago, I bought a Rem 74 in 30-06 at a shop in Upstate New York. I forget exactly how I exported it to Canada. But, I bought it after the deer season had closed. The owner obviously had brought it in, and I scooped it before he could re-buy it. That is how it works.

What difference would it make where you buy the gun you assess the gun by the condition of the gun
By the way there are pawn shops in Canada that buy and sell guns

We have one up here…. But it is really hit and miss and the prices are not often a great deal!

Gonna throw out a wild card, what would the possibility be they're stolen ?

It depends on the jurisdiction. I know in Regina, the pawns have to take ID and details of all the merch they accept. It is a bylaw. There is/was a Regina Police Service officer assigned to prowl the half-dozen pawn shops and he regularly worked with the owners in case there were shady stories.

I went into a Pawn Shop in Montana and it had more guns than any Canadian Gun Store I've ever been in.
