Hi all,

This is for 270Winchester, never reloaded this caliber before

I ended up with this Savage 24" 1:10

I do have some 130gr Nosler Partitions that I will use

Nosler book says H4831SC is the most accurate tested

Of course I do not have any

In your guys opinion, I have in Inventory, which one would be a better fit for powder:

IMR4198
IMR4350
IMR4831
H4350
Varget

Or should I try to locate some H4831SC? Anything other powder?

Regards

I have a cherry load for a 150 gr TTSX I believe it was for moose, really accurate node at 200 yards. I'm out of country atm, if you're interested I'll look it up when I get home.

The powders fastest to slowest are imr 4350, h4350,imr4831,h4831. If you don't have h4831, then the powders you list that's the closest is imr4831.

Believe it was Jack O'Connor who said if you can't get a 270 to shoot with a flat based bullet and h4831, it won't shoot. Something like that anyways.

Today's h and imr 4831 would be very similar. Since O'Connor was active as a writer 40+ years ago he was probably talking about the original h4831. Which was slower than h4831 of t9day.

OP, any loads listed for H4831 will be safe with IMR4831 but depending on the age of your powder, not the other way around.

IMR4831 is about 5% faster than H4831

The three best powders you have available are just about the perfect burn rate for the weight of the bullet you're going to use.

IMR4350, H4350 and IMR4831 will all do exemplary duty when their loads are tailored to your rifle.

Your Savage 110 is a very strong rifle. Most of the loads in the manuals are held to 50k-52kCUP with these powders in deference to the semi auto and pump action rifles they were originally chambered in.

There are other powders that deliver higher pressures, such as Hybrid 100V but the velocities are the same.

IMHO, Varget is a bit fast for this cartridge but it's OK if that's what you have the most of and at max pressures, will deliver similar velocities to the others.

Standard Large Rifle Primers are OK but I find that magnum primers, in my case cci250, give better consistent velocities and accuracy.

There was a time when the jacket material used for Nosler bullets, along with being slightly thicker, caused slightly higher pressures.

With that massive Savage action, this won't be a problem.

I would go online to the Hodgdon's website or the website listed on the containers and look up their loading charts. It's free.

Best loads I had for my 270win was 51.5gr imr4350 under a 150gr partition, and 53gr imr4350 under a 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.
