22lr - what's the cheapest right now - and how good is it?

What type of "good" are you looking for? Tiny 100 yard groups in a precision rimfire rifle? Or 100% reliability in a semi-auto pistol? Or cleanest burning/least fouling? I imagine some of those boxes can be checked with single types of ammo, but I doubt any will do all 3.

I bought a new 22 pistol a few months ago (GSG Firefly) and it showed up today. Hopefully next weekend I can get out and see what ammo it likes to eat. I had multiple boxes of the Federal Bulk packs, but I bought a 50 round box of CCI Stinger, Sellier and Belot, and about 7 different varieties of Eley. Whatever the pistol doesn't like will get fed through my 22lr rifles. And whatever the pistol does like will guide my stocking-up

CCI Standard Velocity is probably the best mix of reliability and value (which I know generally are not mutually inclusive). Gagnon Sports has them for $59.99 a brick last checked...

I was going to mention S&B, but there's a thread at present there a poster observed some issues with the standard ones. Only a few months ago I was seeing boxes of 50 sell for $4.99.

Thunderbolts are cheap but are consistently problematic. Strangely they are sold out in many places. Along with that, the Golden Bullets can be cheap too, but the quality is hit and miss despite it coming in bulk packs.

Aguilas also can be had for cheap and the round nose ones are surprising decent (at least for my limited experience).

But I'd say you can't go wrong with CCI Standard Velocity rounds.

I just saw today that G4C has some Hornady bricks in. Good price if you can snag a brick. Good quality ammo - very reliable in my experience.

Just a warning here - I bought some of the Herters 22 HP-HV last Summer. It was only $25/500 back then, I thought it was good for practice BUT Only if you're shooting/dumping a semi-blaster like GSG or such. Some friends at the range loved it for that - Not very accurate at 50, fair at 25, in my opinion, but I try to keep all my 22s under 1-inch @ 50. These came in a loose box of 500.
None around my end of Can, but there may be some in other Cab or BPs.

Torontonians - convenience beats shipping - Al Flaherty's has CCI.
With sales tax, CAD12.50 for 50.
2 varieties - 1 for hunting, 1 for target practice.
Plastic box that can be closeable with factory sticker - comes with the hunting option.
The option for target practice comes in a regular cardboard box.

total newb here but i agree with the comments about CCI ammo for target shooting. bought a box of the remington stuff recently, and im not bothered by it but can tell the quality is lower becuause of how it cycles (or sometimes, doesnt cycle!) through the gun. CCI seems to be a good fit of quality and affordability in my little experience

I buy whenever I see what is on sale. My guideline for cheap price ammo this summer was $.10 cents per round but that has come up to around $.12 cents. I have a couple single action revolvers that really do not care what i feed them, but my GSG semi auto likes a bit higher quality. It will work fine with cheap stuff but it gets real dirty.

Watch for sales and shipping deals. If you buy on line, where some of the best prices are, you have to calculate in the shipping cost before you leave your local seller. The only place I can get ammo where I live is at CTire, and they have no .22 shells available now so other day I saw Winchester 36 grain 555 packs at Cabelas for $65 with free shipping over $49 so bought some up.

My previous choice was Federal Bulk 36gr CPHP--usually sold in 525 round boxes. It has been unavailable for 2 years now.

In the US it has come back. It is now $24.95 for 325 rounds. 200 rounds less for about the same price. I don't think anything will be as cheap as it once was. And to get something of the quality that we became accustomed to in "the good years" will cost more than we imagined.

With all that being said, CCI is a good "daily" round if you are taking your time with shots and not just mag dumping into dirt clods. Again, it's almost 2x the price of what I bought it for like 4 years ago but that's kinda common across the board of life these days.

Geez - That's DOUBLE the "Old Price" - CCI-MM was $11-12 per 100 plastic-box the last time I bought some. I'll hafta check around, tho I don't need any, it is pretty accurate. I have ca 10K of 'accurate LR' but that is a floating target - CAN'T HAVE TOO MUCH !!

Well, I said "last time ...", like a year or so ago. I remember in the 60s about $3-4/brick. Last year CCI-MM was $10-11/100 plastic boxes - then all of a sudden they were All Gone . . .
