You ever hear of Babbitt?
A friend gave me about 50 lbs last year before he passed away.
Said it was good for hardener?
I plan on trying my hand at casting this winter

Babbit is good stuff. Lots of different formulations though, so if there are any bars with markings, it might be worth doing some research to see what the ratios of the make up are.If you have a scrap yard anywhere near your paths of travel, it may be worth asking if they have a 'gun' to shoot it with, to read the material specs. X-Ray Florescence Gun, if I remember the name correctly.

Also, depending on where you are, it may be worth more than pure tin, as Babbit, to someone who is repairing old machinery.

View attachment 630276It came from the local pulp and paper mill, so not sure what it was used for.
He said it’s the good stuff and it should last me a long time.

Just pulled out the bag, definitely more than 50 lbs
He gave me a couple hundred lbs of lead as well.

Yeah, as per the post above, used generally, for bearings on heavy shafts. Pouring and fitting new bearings is a bit of an art.

True fact, in your car too, a thin layer of Babbit on every crank bearing shell! :)

If there are no markings, the XRF Gun is the best bet. Otherwise it's sorta by Guess, and by golly, trying to figure out how much to use/ aka: how much tin is in it.

Last piece of babbit cost me 45 dollars so it's not going to bullets for sure. Pewter I got a good amount from a shop that casts pins and such but it's got bismuth mixed in it and is really hard. I buy a lot of pewter but the old lady finds it and it gets regulated to shelves on me.

Ya, I really don’t have much knowledge in this area.
My buddy was gonna teach me how to cast, unfortunately he had a heart attack and died.
Good old guy, lots of knowledge.

I’m planning on learning this winter.
I’ve got a few things gathered up and am almost ready.

Yomommas, how do you add the 5% or whatever pewter to your casting pot when it is in ingot form? I break my pewter tankards apart so that I can snip the required amount into my casting pot. In other words, I weigh the Pb that goes into the pot and then weigh out the required amount of pewter for the pot. It gets stirred a bit and then I continue casting.

Some pewter items have oxides or other coating on them. The melting and fluxing cleans all this stuff.

I have other molds where i remelt these ingots into tiny disks.

Ingots are easier to store.

Also i usually make up a 40 pound batch of casting ready lead
