Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm problems...

but when something does eventually break(and it will) good luck finding parts, Springfield likes to hold on to the little pieces:runaway:

That's why I got an M&P instead of the XD. If the guys in the states can't get parts and have to send it back for issues, what are we going to do up here?

i saw online somewhere, people were having striker issues with the m&p 45s, i guess its not restricted to that one model. i like the m&p, but i think i will get an xd, im told they are quite robust.

Quite a few people who bought the XD had broken triggers quite early. Every new gun design seems to turn up problems. I think I will be making sure I use snap caps for my dry fire practice.

Even old models can have problems. The Edmonton Police Service just had all 1500 of their Glock 22's replaced free of charge by Glock. Something about cracked frame rails and frames.

Mechanical things break, it's just the way it is.

The XD is not a new design like the M&P, the XD is just a rebadged pistol that is made in Europe somewhere(Croatia I believe but could be wrong) and had been around for a while.

Croatia is correct, it is called the HS2000 over there. I think the croatian army got their first order of the pistols in 1999 or somewhere's there about.

steeleclipse,

What is the round count on your M&P?

I have about 1200 through mine with no issues and just was curious as to the number yours had when the striker broke.

I would say roughly the same amount of rounds. It didn't break while firing, it broke when I put it back together after cleaning it. I dry fired it to test it, and no response. Pretty strange, eh?

I have the M&P 9 without the mag safety and have run a little over 1,000 rounds through it without a hick-up.

I have seen and heard a lot of problems with the newer semi-autos with the mag safeties both S&W and Ruger that I have seen personally.

don't like glocks personally

say, do you think the old steel guns such as the 1911 design are more robust and durable than these plastic pistols?

If Glock isn't your cup of tea, try an M&P on for size. As others have eluded to, the XD is a decent gun -its just that Springfield are stingy with parts.

I'm a firm believer that all guns are created equal insofar as they all break -eventually. Get one you can get parts for.

Makes me wonder how reliable the M&P 9 is for service...

Broken parts happen in every firearm. If a broken part made a firearm unsuitable for service Glock would definitely be not be suitable.

They have had kabooms, broken frames and frame rails that caused all EPS pistols to be replaced, phase 3 malfunctions for the NYPD that caused Glock to set up a mini-facory for the NYPD and retrofit all their pistols, Broken frame rail in conjunction with a broken firing pin block that caused a Calgary Police Service Tactical unit member to get shot in the leg by a fully holstered pistol that he didn't even touch...

Does that make Glock an unreliable pistol not suitable for service? I don't think so, it's a very reliable pistol. It's not my cup of tea but it's still a good gun.

All firearms will have problems, a couple broken strikers and a couple of cracked slides is hardly anything to be really worried about.

YMMV

The U.S. military has 1911's in its inventory that have over 500,000 rounds through them. They have been rebuilt several times but the frames are original and still going. I seriously doubt that a plastic frame would last anywhere as long as (and I'm not even talking about aluminum). And before someone posts a link to the infamous glock torture test from glocktalk, let's keep in mind that putting a gun in the freezer or dropping it in a bucket of dirt is not quite the same thing as running half-a-million rounds of ammo through it.
