Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm problems...

So I cleaned my M&P 9mm after a day at the range, and when i went to dry fire it to make sure it was all working, the trigger won't reset, almost like it won't fire when the magazine is out (magazine safety). I took it apart, everything looks to be where it is supposed to, yet i cannot get it to fire.

Any ideas?

When you have it apart, does the trigger bar move to the left if you pull up on the mag disconnect?

Does the sear move when you flip the sear deactivation lever up and down?

did you reset the firing pin? you need to rack the slide about an inch back to be able to dryfire the gun. since it doesn't have a restrike capability.

yes it does move to the left.

yes the sear moves, not much though...

i dont know if this means anything, but the firing pin spring feels loose, and there is a lot of play in the firing pin...

That sounds strange. With the slide locked back is the striker exposed? With the slide locked back, the sriker should be fully retracted. Is the striker block working? If you remove the slide and push the block in, you should be able to move the strike forward. When you move the striker rearward again you should feel spring pressure and hear a click when the block re-engages.

When you reassemble, you must either manually reset the sear lever or insert a mag to reset. Until the sear is reset, the striker cannot be cocked. So after the sear is reset, the slide will need to be racked to #### the striker.

I don't think the striker block is working.

That is definitely not right at all. The striker at rest should be way over to the barrel end of the slide and it should take way more force to move it to the rear of the slide.

You could take the striker assembly apart to see if you can find anything that is broken. To do this you move the striker all the way to the barrel end of the slide, you might have to push the firing pin block to do this. You will notice in the channel (you can see the striker spring) some white plastic sticking out. Use a little screw driver to push this plastic toward the barrel end of the slide. While holding it there, you should be able to remove the slide end cap. You can then remove the striker assembly (I can't remember if you need to push the firing pin block to remove it). To reassemble, you will need to push the firing pin block twice at differnt times to get the assembly to the point you can reinstall the slide end plate.

No problem, glad S&W is gonna get you all fixed up.

I have heard a few reports of broken strikers on the MP-Pistol forum. There is a few threads on there where the guys are trying to figure out what is causing them.

It seems to point to excessive dry firing without snap caps and or dry firing to dis-assemble instead of using the sear deactivation lever.

I dry fire, but not excessively. I posted the same stuff at the MP Pistol forum, so I will see what they have to say.

i saw online somewhere, people were having striker issues with the m&p 45s, i guess its not restricted to that one model. i like the m&p, but i think i will get an xd, im told they are quite robust.
