Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

Trying to pay off the Visa bill from Christmas, and get a couple of other projects clear of the lathe/mill first.

This looks like a "next fall" project to me....I know how busy my summers get.

:D:p:D No...Im just jealous cuz I dont gots one...

The pics are great too....maybe all the 'how to' stuff should be put in a new thread and stickied...?

I'd LOVE to oblige you Klunk, but I'm not a mod here!!!

I'll see if I can do something over on milsurps.com

Ho Boy...I take off to Cuba for a week's fun in the sun and find some of you guys have been busy. I owe a few PMs and some photos and measurements to a couple of you guys. Please bear with me for a day or two until I recover from the shock of waking up at +22 this morning and walking out of the airport to -22 just before noon.

Milling machines and metal forming tools? The khyber pass tinsmiths are likely rolling in their loincloths laughing. But if you gotta use shortcuts like those, then I guess you gotta.

I'll forward some more substantive photos for Claven to use regarding my magwell fabrication. I only used a portion of the photos I had on this thread so I wouldn't tie up guys with dial up service for too long.

It would be nice if we kept this thread to the topic of making and registering semi auto stens, and not go into the politics of gun control. That would be much better addressed over in the politics forum.

Has anyone made a magwell for a sten with the mag on the bottom?

If you look at the section of Laidler's book dealing with aftermarket Stens, there is such a gun. It requires that the bolt be cut and welded for bottom feed.
Apart from that sort of modification, there is the BD-3008, of course, which is more or less a Sten with bottom feed.

Legally, the magazine housing on a Mk. II carbine is the receiver.
When the Germans designed the 3008, the geometry was changed for bottom feed, right and up ejection. There is the example of necessary design modifications.

The problem being, on a German gun, the mag well is part of the receiver tube, so there is a bit more fabricating involved than on a Sten MkII. Though you COULD follow the StenII design, but rotate the housing assembly 90 degrees... I imagine the CFC would want to see it and assign a new FRT number though.

If a 3008 were made to accept Sten mags, it would also accept MP38u40 magazines, which are slightly shorter, front to back. Best of both worlds, lower priced magazines for shooting, original one for display. IF the MP/BD3008 used a magazine catch retained the way the catch is on a Sten, the retainer could be made thinner so the Sten mag. could be used. But the magazine housing is a different design, and the mag. catch is installed in a semi-permanent manner. No way to adjust the box.

thanks for the photo updates. how is your registration going with the cfc Claven2? i assumed you started the process as you started the registered bits.
