Long story short, I bought some large rifle primers off a guy locally who was getting out of reloading. While I was on the way to his place he found a pack of CCI Large Rifle Magnum mixed in with a brick of Pistol primers he had. He wasn't sure if the box actually contained LRM primers, or if they had pistol primers but were in the wrong packaging for some reason, so he threw them in with the Federal primers I was buying for free (I know, what a deal in todays market!)
I measured them, and they're all about 0.126-0.129" tall, with the ones on the left trending towards 0.128-0.129, while the ones on the right trended towards 0.126-0.127. (As measured with dial calipers, I know, not ideal for such precise measurements). My problem is Sierra lists Large Rifle being taller than Large Pistol, but the ranges have a slight overlap between 0.123 and 0.126: https://www.sierrabullets.com/primer-substitutions/
So, other than measuring the height of the primer is there another way to figure out whether these are pistol or not? Can you tell simply by looking at them side-by-side? They sure look like the same thing to me, but obviously I don't want to make a bunch of loads with pistol primers.
Here are some pics comparing what I bought from the guy vs some I already had on the shelf.
