Western crown land VS Eastern private land

So I am at a point where I'm ready to leave suburban life behind and buy a piece of land. Big dilemma for me is that land where I live, out West (BC) is just not affordable, while land back East (Qc & On), where I am originally from, is much more affordable. I could basically sell my place in BC and buy 50+ acres and build a house mortgage free, in my mid 30's, which isn't bad.

Look at these two mls maps, filtered at 50+ acres under $250k. It's ridiculous that we have this much land out west, yet non of it is reasonably priced...

Although I have access to pretty much unlimited crown land out here, I'm just pulled towards living on acreage where my kids can just step outside and roam free, hunt, and just grow up how I wish I had grown up.

What do you guys think about a young family moving East to be able to live mortgage free on acreage (I know, sounds assbackwards doesn't it?), versus living a "suburban everyday life" near massive amounts of crown land? Hunting wise and for any other reason, Am I crazy?
 
We are doing the same thing,
Selling in BC, and letting someone else pay the insane prices and high mortgage interest, buy outright in a cheaper province and continue life, hunting fishing etc can be done everywhere and while the mountains are nice; not having to hike hundreds of stories of elevation every time you hunt will be just as nice lol
 
None of it is reasonably priced because huge portions of it aren't for sale.

Cheap land or housing isn't enough to get me to leave BC, it's too damn nice here if you're into the outdoors.

It's very tempting, and seems more likely everyday for my family as well. I've been telling myself the East sucks for almost 15 years now, but I have only lived in MTL and TO, never out in the bush.

Been looking out that way, York River Valley as well. Wife does contract work remotely so no problem for her and I own a small cabinet shop, which I can setup anywhere I wanted really. Would be nice to have a shop next to the house rather than paying rent that keeps going up every year...

The problem with crown land is anyone can use it, any time they want
and I've seen first hand how people assume they are still on crown land when they come on to (well marked) private property

That was my original plan when we decided to move out here, but still out of reach to try and be mortgage free in BC.

The real estate prices have been both a blessing and a curse, in that our house is now worth almost double what we bought it for just 4 years ago, which gives us enough to buy outright back East but still not enough to buy small acreage out here without a significant mortgage...

Now some hunting talk.... is 20 to 50 acres enough for some decent hunting back in Ontario/QC? I know it won't be the same type of hunting as in Southern BC but can I expect enough wildlife to harvest bag limits every year? I'm looking at Ottawa Valley, Frontenac region, Outaouais for land.

You will run into guys who think they own it because they have hunted it before

I hunt in the Frontenac region highlands. Lots of crown land. Very nice cottages around. You surely should be able to get something decent around Madoc, Marmora along Hwy 7 and vicinity. However you would be quite a distance from what conveniences you may be used to. Good luck in your search.

Point taken, although I am part Quebecois myself, I could not stand the attitude in Montreal and the surrounding areas (Larentians, Eastern townships, etc...). I am not familiar with other regions which is why I was considering the area bordering Ontario.

We have been weakened by the Okanagan climate for 10 years now, are winters in that region much worse/longer than Eastern Ontario?
 
You won’t find the variety of game you’re used to in the West. Ontario really has white tailed deer and bear as a regular big game animal. Draws for Elk and Moose are hard to come by unless in a large group. Ontario does have party hunting which helps in that regard. I travel to Alberta just to get onto game I can’t get here. We do have pretty good turkey hunting if you like that.

Ontario has its inexpensive parts but it’s not that cheap. I’d think hard about it because it’s likely a one way move.
 
Ontario affordable? I know where 200 acres of prime deer property is. Has a huge house on it, Like 6000sq plus a pool house. 7.2 million last I heard, Buy it because I hunt next door hahah
 
I love hunting, but seeing as all I really need is one deer a year (and I barely need that) moving to somewhere close to hunting or having it in the back yard would not be a motivator for me.

But I am 30 years older than the OP, happy where I am and I enjoy getting out of town and exploring all the crown land available in BC for the one deer.

Fishing? Nah...Not on my radar.
