Folks

I've finally located a barrel in .280 for my T/C Encore and am looking to have it "Ackley' Improved" - more for the prevention of case stretching than any increase in performance, but I'll take that too.

Any recommendations on who to do the job?? I'd prefer if any recommendations are at least someone that you have personal experience, however I'll take what I can get...

thanks

North End Precision Rifle did my 280AI, but it is a bolt gun, I am not sure if there is a difference. My rifle was superbly crafted, and shoots very accurately, I am very pleased with it.

To correctly chamber for an AI version, the barrel is supposed to be set back at least 4 thou and then chambered... as the correct headspace for an AI version is 4 thou shorter than the original version...

A factory loaded round should be firmly felt on closing in an AI chamber.

Roger that - perhaps rechambering a single-shot may not be the best option then...

What's the point of a 280AI? More velocity?

I've always thought that it was cool, ergo always wanted one. There is the real benefit of less case stretching, the nebulous benefit of some added velocity (not much, I know) and the very real cachet of likely having the only one in the crew. If I do happen to come across someone else with one we can turn our nose up at the rest and talk rifle nerd talk.

Don't you DARE try to interject logic into my fantasy... LOL

If you do have to set the barrel back to AI it….. Wouldnt you also have to move the hinge bracket on the barrel forward the same amount or headspace would be out??? Might be better just ordering one from NINE35? I think you can order a barrel in just about anything you want.

I think that guntech was talking "in general" - setting the barrel back on a break-action single Shot would be far more complex than on, for instance, a bolt gun.

I didn't want an MGM barrel, I wanted an SSK barrel (which I got). I may leave this one unmolested and grab a 7-08 barrel if I can find one 24" long...
