My son has a hunting spot that's has wild turkey, wild hogs, and in a shotgun /muzzleloader deer area.
He was looking at getting a shot gun to cover all three.
I see old bolt action shotguns at shows with the old poly chokes going for cheap has anyone modified a old bolt action with a scope mount? can you shoot slugs out of a poly choke gun?

thoughts?

No they will ruin a poly choke. I had a Winchester Model 1400 given to me by a guy who thought he could shoot rifled slugs through them. Ruined the choke. Now I don't know if he had it all the way cranked to full when he did it, but that choke was garbage. Split it in two. I took it to a gunsmith and had the choke cut off and left as straight bore, mounted a scope on it and used it with rifled slugs for deer after that. Shot decent enough to shoot a few deer. I upgraded to a different gun with a rifled barrel and shot sabots after that. Much better accuracy and could shoot better out past 100yards.
I personally suggest you find a gun with a slug barrel and a bird barrel and swap as you need. I run a BPS with a 26" bird barrel and a 22" cantilevered slug barrel and its a great gun. Can swap barrels and the scope on the slug barrel doesn't loose zero.

Thanks for your input ..I was suggesting the same thing to him as well

can you shoot rifled slugs through a rifled 12g with no choke or are rifled slugs best result through a smooth bore??

A rifled slug barrel would be ideal for deer/hogs. Say on an 870 platform. Then finding another barrel with a 28" or 30" fixed Full choke should be easy and cheap.

Rifled slugs can be shot thru a fully rifled barrel. You may or may not experience leading. Some rifled slugs are designed only for rifled barrels but generally rifled slugs are for smoothbores. The "fins" on the slug are designed to swage thru the choke. Sabots are only for rifled barrels
