I think even the old-style fibre wad shotshells would produce more open patterns than plastic shotcups. Not sure if anyone even makes those any longer.
Thanks all. Sounds like I'll just have to live with it.

Kent used to bring in Gamebore hunting loads with fibre wads. I have quite an assortment that I have acquired over the years. Send them an email and they may be able to point you to a retailer in your area.

If you reload .... there are spreader inserts ....

Interesting, now having read the sales pitch I feel I need some.
These:
Gamebore Regal Game

They used to be called Traditional Game

I've got a couple flats of Kent 12ga #8 sporting/target spreader loads (and would part with a flat). I patterned them from two different Browning BSS and they throw beautiful patterns, almost text book IC from the F choke barrels.
Challenger lists a 20ga "mini mag" spreader 1oz. load, but only in #9 shot - a classic woodcock loading, I believe. I've never seen them on the shelf and Challenger will not do direct sales to the public (I asked a few years ago - wanted to do an order of 10 cases and they said no).
I've got a bunch of Gamebore Regal Game 2.5" 16ga. ammo, as well as a couple boxes of the older Traditional Game. I've not patterned it yet in my Belgian SxS.
