I have a chance to pick up a Sako AV deluxe , 30-06, with a vari-x 11 in 2 x 7 32 Leupold . Price asking is 1200.00 . Some questions if anyone can help . The weight is 9.3 oz as is . Too me that's a bit heavy so is there anything that can be done to reduce weight ? Are there other wood stocked models of Sako that weigh less ? The gun is a beauty in great condition.

Tks

These are heavy guns

I have an Aiii 338 wm in an edge fill mcmillan, barrel bobbed to 20 inches. 7lbs without a scope

I have had a SAKO AV in 7mm mag for at least 30 years [mfg. in 1975]. It is a very fine rifle , a bit heavy but that reduces recoil a lot as well as the way the Sako stock lines up to the shoulder it is definitely a winning choice . It is for sure a keeper. Choose wisely. The Tikka line weighs less and is also excellent quality. Cheers

That is a really good price for a deluxe, those models are not often hunted, not because they are too heavy, because they are too nice.

I was thinking of the reduced recoil. Also, this rifle will not be on long mountain hikes. More a sit and see. The trend of course is too lighter but what does a heavier gun bring

I have a deluxe in .270 Win. Definitely a bit heavy as a carry rifle but they are quality rifles that command premium prices. It is joy to shoot, very accurate, but really to pretty to drag through the bush. In great condition I would hazard the rifle alone would bring $1500+. Any modifications would significantly reduce the value.

I sold one on here a few years ago that was 300Win rebarreled to 300Wby, really nice wood, smooth action, very nice gun, was happy to get $1000 for it.
My old man still hunts with one in 243, don't think he's ever used anything else as long as I've been alive. It's heavy for sure, but it's his lottery ticket every year for everything.
If you ever handled a Weatherby Vanguard, it's not much different.

I got it. will shoot this weekend. I love the engraving and finish, a beauty.

Excellent! Let us know how it shoots and post a picture.

Interesting comparison to the Vanguard. I have a S1 in .270 and I never thought of the similarities. My Vanguard is the most accurate rifle I own, consistently under an inch with many different loads. Bought it from Wholesale when they closed down. $700 for the rifle and a V3 Leupold.

Great rifles, with smooth actions.
You will enjoy it, and as you will be mostly stand hunting or short hikes, the weight shouldn't be a great concern to you, and you will enjoy how it carries, handles, balances and shoots. Found all that I have owned and/or shot to be pretty accurate.
