Krico optic mounts - help!

I just recently purchased this older Krico 222 which has optic mounts that I have never seen before. My plan was to change out the bases so I can mount a higher power scope with the regular Krico bases which I have on order. I assumed the bases that are on the rifle would be screwed on.......that does not appear to be the case - looks like they may be brazed on!
Anybody out there with experience on these type of bases and what I have to do to remove them?

A lot of those were screwed on, many were soldered on, and others silver soldered... silver solder requires red hot heat and re bluing. I never liked the ones silver soldered on as the heat required affects the heat treatment of the action too.
 
Heat with a torch and tap with a hammer and punch. They will shear off usually 'somewhat' easily. Expect the receiver to need refinishing. (by tap, I mean smack swiftly)
 
Not what I wanted to hear but suspected as much! Would a hand held torch using MAP gas be hot enough to do this job?

I don't think so... too slow and the action would get too hot... best done with a large oxy-acetylene torch... heat the mount quickly and knock it off as soon as you can...

What you have are called SEM (Suhler einhack Montage) which is a very expensive German quick detachable Scope Mounting System. Cost of a set of Bases and uppers is arround 800.** yes 800 Dollars. And professional mounting by a with this system familliar Gunsmith another 800.**

If I where you I would leave the Bases and get the corresponding Uppers for your new Scope. The Scope you show has soldered uppers which was pretty well discontinued in the 70ties. I may have some used uppers which will fit, also there is a place Stateside which sells new uppers.

That is interesting information! Are these uppers just regular rings that have the claws attached to the bottom of them? Are your used uppers for 1" or 30mm tubes? Thanks

We (Gunther Kautsky and myself) used to do this mounting system (only with clamp on scope rings) in 1968 at Uptown Sporting Goods in Calgary. At that time the parts (in white) were less than $200... our labour was about $200 plus re bluing. We would either soft solder or screw on the bases.
 
Those are very expensive claw mounts and rings. Each mount is hand fitting job of a competent Büchsenmacher. Very few in Canada would know how to do it properly.
Keep them and change the scope only, there is the way. Those bases are adjustable for wind-age and elevation. They are guarantied to hold zero almost forever.

Just for comparison, in 1968 I bought a good 1910 Victorian 2 1/2 story house in the city for $ 7500.oo . ( no garage)
I would go with keep the mounts and find rings, or Just use as is.
 
Thanks for the responses - I will have to do my homework here to decide on best path forward.

The nice thing is I have a few months to figure out best option......leaning towards leaving the bases and finding tube rings for it as action/blueing on this rifle is in excellent condition! Running a torch on it seems too harsh for me.

You could do worse than to download the catalog from Recknagel, and see if you can find a more modern style ring compatible with your current mount system.

I have no doubt they are likely expensive, but still cheaper than taking off the current bases and refinishing the rifle.

IIRC, Wolverine, in Manitoba, was listed as a dealer.

The uppers can be had in 1 inch or 30 mm. All come now in split Rings. The problem will be if the Feet from the Uppers can be machined & filed to your existing Lowers. The few remaining Uppers I have are in 1Inch. As somebody else suggested, fitting them is an art and should be left to the well experienced, one light File Stroke to many could ruin the whole setup.

I own a number of fine Guns with professionally mounted SEM Mounts. I am also a Hobby machinist and metal worker but mounting a SEM no Sir I don't have the patience for that.

The bases with both the front and rear claws entering from the top require a very short scope preferably with no front bell if clamp style rings on the tube are used. Like a 1-4x scope.

This ^^^^ they are among the best mount system in the world. As for heating up a rifle with a torch..... well I would spend my money on a competent GUNSMITH first.

Dennis, For Scopes with Front Bell there are Rings which clamp directly onto the Front Bell which is usually done within 1/2" of the end to prevent the Front Bell hitting the Rifle Barrel. Again those Rings come in different Sizes to fit the Bell. I do have a few new ones in different sizes on Hand.

A little confused......I assumed the claws on the rings would be a standard size to fit the bases that I have?

Unfortunately not, there are several different sizes. Exact measurements must be taken before purchasing and final fitting must be done by somebody which knows fitting procedure/requirements and lastly know how to use Files.
