Cold weather cracking

My Model 700 VLS got it yesterday. Have seen it before on guns shipped over the winter too. Remington and Browning finishes are usually the victim. A piss off...

What leads you to believe it's from the cold? Not saying it isn't, but seems odd does it not?

Maybe the laminate/wood contracting more then the finish, or expansion was to quick upon warming back up...either way it sucks.

Yes it was cold. It wasn’t there before I took it out and noticed it when I got home.
I’m going to try to fix it with a couple coats of Watco. The first coat was promising.

Minus 30 +/-, no real wind. The brake pedal on the truck was pretty hard.

Buddy of mine told me it could be fixed but we haven’t bothered as it still sounds good.

This is pretty minor in my opinion.
I only wore woolen gloves once at -35 in Moose Jaw. The ice crystals from frozen perspiration acted like sand paper on my glossy Remington rifle finish.

Yes, that’s a last resort. As easy as it cracked, it would be a pain to strip.

You can still see them if you look hard but they aren’t as bad as they were. Watco Danish oil left on for a half hour then wiped off.

Common problem with epoxy finishes, ...... they will spider-web with extreme cold or heat, try firing one at -50 or leaving it in your car at +50 with the windows all up!
Only real solution is refinishing, and not easy with epoxy! Years ago was common with Browning, Weatherby, Huskys, and some Remingtons.

Oil finish… always oil finish! Never had a problem even at -55c the coldest I ever hunted( well camping and not seeing anything is more accurate!!)

Sadly, most factory finishes arent oil. Shame too. - dan

Minus 40 and the dash on the truck cracks in the middle of the night on a Chev granted a early 80s model .

This one, a laminate mountain rifle, is much more cracked. Stripped the entire stock and going to start over.
