Hi. I always wanted a side by side 410 and bought one on impulse. The 410 shells I have ( some pretty old and some new) all fit so snuggly that the eject spring is not strong enough to push them out so that they can be removed. Even when only one shell is chambered. I have lightly polished the chamber but the shells fit so tightly they must be removed with a cleaning rod. If I continue to polish to make them loser, how loose is too loose?
By marking the brass with a marker pen I can determine the binding is the brass, not the cartridge. The binding is same for all lengths of cartridges.
This was a new gun and the store will not entertain a refund.

Despite the marker test, is it possible you're shooting magnum .410 shells in a gun not chambered for them? Otherwise I would say you should polish the chamber just enough to be ejected, or to allow the shells to fall out if the gun is inverted, and then stop.

Thanks all for the replies. I realized after posting I should have written ‘extractor’ It is only meant to push the shell out to get a grip onto. The shotgun is marked BEAVER ARMS, and not a ‘high end ‘ piece. Looks pretty at first glance. As for the polishing, I split the end of a piece of 1/4 plastic tube and put a strip of 400grit in, wrapped around. Using an electric drill it’s pretty conservative.

Probably better to use very fine steel wool for such polishing, at least that's what I keep reading. You put it in a 12 G cleaning wad jig and mount a section of a sectional cleaning rod in an electric drill.

400 grit can take out more material than you think, I've only ever used 0000 steel wool for chamber polishing. If I was going to use sandpaper then I don't think I'd go any more coarse than 800 grit and be very careful. Maybe I'm overly cautious but if you take more material away than necessary then you can't put it back!
