Field Stripping A Ruger Mark III – HELP

I have the same pistol but so far have not even attempted to strip it, have heard so many horror stories about tipping it up and then pointing the thing down so bits fall in to place I decided if and when it needs cleaning i'll remove the wood grips and plunge it into my ultra sonic cleaner.
A cheap cop out if ever there was one but it works well as long as you dry and lubricate it well after words.

Despite the problem Bronco Boy is unfortunately having, it's not usually that bad.

It only breaks down into four main assemblies - the grip, the barrel/receiver, the bolt and the mainspring housing.

Most of the tipping this way and that is not even necessary. That's just to get the hammer in the proper position and you can easily do this with your finger or a piece of dowel. The only critical time is when you reinsert the mainspring housing. There's a little swinging rod that has to fit in the groove of the housing, so the pistol has to be pointed up. It's no big deal.

In my experience, the biggest trick to it is making sure the barrel/receiver is seated properly. It should overlap the back of the grip. It can look like it's on far enough, but may not actually be. If not, you won't be able to properly reinsert the mainspring housing and bolt stop pin assembly. To make sure the barrel/receiver is seated all the way back, place the muzzle on a padded surface and tap the back of the grip assembly with a mallet a few times. After that the mainspring should go back in easily (but don't forget to tip it to get that little rod lined up right.)

Everyone, thanks so much for your assistance. I'm still no further ahead but it's certainly my own incompetence, the help and advice given here was top notch.

Just be careful wrestling with it,the lug on the front is cheap white metal and bends pretty easy.Bent mine tying to get it off when i installed a defective VQ trigger. Now i have to put a shim in there with it so it doesn't ratle :(

After skillfully fixing mine ( :jerkit: ), I decided to again replicate the problem and see what I did to fix it. Not my sharpest move of the night  :slap: .

I ended up driving out the pins and dropping the guts so the mainspring would free up. I got it apart, but it was a instantaneous detail strip, with no careful layout of the parts. Thank god for the internet and a couple sites. On the plus side is that it needed a good clean anyway.

Anyhow, it's back together and still seems to function.

(E)

I broke down and took the gun to a Smithy today. The place were I bought it have one on staff and he's going to look at it tomorrow. I'll report back what he says he did to "fix" it.

Put it all back together and same sh$t. F%$K me!

This is the step I am screwing up.

*Most Critical Step* of reassembly. Swing mainspring housing nearly closed, tilt pistol slightly rearwards so hammer strut falls onto mainspring housing ledge, close housing slowly, ensuring hammer strut stays in place.

Good job.

Also G-96  Good stuff. I use it on all of my pistols as well. The stainless models seem to do really well with it. Plus you only have to wipe the pistol down rather than scrubbing it.

I had the sights changed on my Hunter to partridge (sp?) style target sights. I find it's much easier to shoot my hunter for target shooting without the V-notch sight. Considering the V-notch is more for hunting I guess that makes sense :D.

I have to do something the sights on mine. I don't like the factory ones either. I have issues getting a good sight picture.

The first time it took me about an hour to get mine back together again. Also my MKIII hunter is easier than my blued MKIII Target.
Anyways this should help you. It helped me. Just follow the link and click on the pictures.

After you've stripped it about 8 times it goes pretty quick and easy. The first few times are a real pain.

Good luck

Hey thanks for the link, I just got the SOB back together and working now. The farking hammer spring was not where it should have been. The pics helped a lot.

I love/hate my Ruger even more than ever. Watch for it on the EE. ;)
