PAL Wait Time

Hi Everyone!

I can happily post my last update for my application process as my card finally showed up yesterday in the mail. Here are the final stats:

Alberta RPAL Registration
RPAL form sent by snail mail (ie. regular Canada Post): Sept 21, 2022
Application received and initial review completed by CFP: Sept 27, 2022 - Apparently Canada Post regular mail didn't take that long to get there (AB to NB). I was pleasantly surprised by this.
Credit Card Charged: Nov 10, 2022
Notice of "Application processed and license has been issued": Nov 18, 2022
Physical Card arriving in mail via regular Canada Post: Dec 20, 2022

Well, it wasn't exactly early December when my card arrived but at least it's just before Christmas! Maybe I can take advantage of some boxing week sales now! It is funny to note that it took almost exactly 3 months for the process to be completed.

Stay positive everyone and hopefully, yours will arrive soon and follow a similar timeline.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Finally got mine today. 1 month exactly from being issued. I’m in Ontario btw. Merry Christmas everyone.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that as your application is already in progress, I don't think they can retroactively can it. The proposed legislation does stipulate the parameters will be in effect at the time of application. Your application has already been accepted and is in processing. Perhaps if/when C21 becomes law, MAYBE then, it will apply to all new applications. It's almost like that handgun freeze. Right up until the point of midnight of the day the freeze was to take effect - if you had already applied for a transfer even minutes before midnight, they will honour it.

Also, as you indicated others have been in your situation and have been approved, so that is a good indication you will very likely be fine - you probably will be contacted for an interview and I think based on what others have said, just be forthright and explain things - people are reasonable and can see that many of us have made mistakes in the past. They have likely interviewed thousands of people and have a sense of how to handle various situations. Just be forthright, transparent and honest with them.

I remember 4 years or so ago during my last PAL renewal - I was going through a divorce AND lost my job AND my ex had called the cops on me 18 times (yes, 18 times) trying to get my firearms taken away at the direction of the convicted felon she was seeing at the time (he has since died...no tears shed). Anyways, in speaking with the police, and with the CFP and with the CFO, I was forthright, measured, mature and polite and they were able to see very clearly that I was married to someone with significant mental and emotional problems and my PAL was renewed once more even though it took a year and I was subject to two interviews (even though my PAL was renewed three times prior to that). I live a very clean life - haven't even had a speeding ticket since 2004.

Right now it doesn't appear that the SECU committee is meeting until April. Sure the government can OIC anything in the meantime, but their long game is to put it in legislation so that a CPC government will have a harder time reversing it.

Keep your head up in the meantime and stay positive.

My worry has definitely been heightened after what this mentally ill Italian guy did nearby where I live, hearing rumours of him being atleast an FAC holder.

If he had a PAL, this would have come out in the news by now. The Liberals would have leveraged that as the death knell to counter the anti-gun control arguments.

Just a heads-up, the printers are more behind than usual (4-6 weeks to get from "issued" status to mailed out).
They are working tomorrow and 3 days next week at Miramichi for whatever that's worth so there might still be some Boxing Week gifts in the mail for people.

Ontario PAL Registration (opted for no RPAL)
PAL form sent by mail: November 16, 2022
Application received: November 22, 2022
initial review completed by CFP: December 13, 2022
Credit Card Charged: December 13, 2022
Notice of "Application processed and license has been issued": December 22, 2022 (today)
Physical Card arriving in mail via regular Canada Post: within 2 weeks

Make what you want of it. I am surprised, expected a longer wait.

Oh the behalf of everyone affected I spoke to Jagmeet Singh in person today at a convention to bring up this very issue and its true ramifications, he wasn't even aware of it, felt awkward afterwards, but it had to be done and proud to have made his previously unaware self aware, I made that change.

...he wasn't even aware of it, felt awkward afterwards, but it had to be done and proud to have made his previously unaware self aware, I made that change.

I'm sure he was, but didn't want to look like the bad guy in person, either that or he's a horrible politician, given the fact that he was ready to vote "yes" on it already.

I've only spoken to the one friend so far. Normally I see everyone during the holidays, but the storm has cancelled most of our plans.

That's the problem with this provision, it's gotten so little light on it that I'm finding people affected by it ignorant of it half a year later, it seriously needs more awareness because its ramifications are serious and downright criminal, hence I felt it vital to bring it up with Jagmeet Singh himself in person today, I hope I made an impact.

Tell your friend to try and get a hold of Alistair MacGregor on the phone, in person if you're in Vancouver Island, the people in this situation need to reach out more.

Apathy will destroy us, that goes for myself.
