New 12ga MP Mold

I got the recipe from Lyman reloading manual. It does say to do 23 grains of unique but I’m a weakling for full power so I purposely did a lighter load. I still need to do a work up. I’m so new to reloading for shotgun I almost need a mentor lmao.

I wear a shoulder pad, when I'm shooting my trap slugs.
It allows me to shoot all day and not pay for it later. I found that the Lee drive slugs are bit more accurate than the Lyman.

Mr Okayshooter……REALLY, The Lee was more accurate? Mind sharing that load. I found the Lee to be pretty good but the Lyman was
definitely better. Many shooters don’t like Lee but I think a lot of their stuff is better than most give credit for.

I don't really load. I take trap loads, have a cutter that cuts the inside of the rolled crimp. So I can dump the shot but leave the wad in. So I cast the shot into slugs. I add some cardboard spacer and have a mini press to push the slug thru the rolled crimp.

I cast the 7/8oz but buy the Lyman slugs from a buddy. I find I get some yawing issue with the lymans.

Here is 5 shots from 25 with the ghetto slugs.

Sorry the photos uploaded sideways.

And these were the Lyman.

My lyman loads use the lyman spec.ed recipe with winchester components. ie. red AA wads, AA hulls and fold crimp. the only thing I had to do was put a fiber spacer to raise the wad columb.

Some nice results there. I have a lot to learn. Finding hills to match wads is such a pain lmao. Why aren’t they all created equal lmao.

I found the Lee .69 round ball to be more accurate than the Lee 7/8 slug (3”@ 100 yards vs 4”). I shoot out of a rifled barrel and use ua fold crimp. Moreover, I trim the wad petals so that they extend just past the diameter of the RB . This makes the petals stiffer and resists damage as it pushes through the crimp. And because the petals are stiffer, I fold them backwards before loading. This stress makes them want to spring open once the wad clears the barrel. It takes a lot of experimenting to find the right mix of components that produces consistent results.

I know I should ask this in the reloading section but I'm new to reloading for shotgun and when doing the fold crimp is the idea to have the slug as close to the top as possible so when you fold the crimp it touches the top of the slug. The reason I ask is that when the slug is 1/4" to 1/2" away from the top of the shell the fold crimp doesn't crimp properly. doesn't create that little lip/wall around the rim of the shell.

What the crimp should look like vs what mine look like.

Does the resistance of the slug/shot assist in creating that lip?

that's why you may need fiber filler discs to bring the wad columb up to the desired height.

Do you put the disc under the wad? I understood it was better under the slug in the wad so the wad seals better to the powder and the barrel after firing. Interesting either way.

You're shooting slugs out of a 12G... what are you expecting :p

On a more serious note: how a more serious note, have you tried some penetration test?

I did some load testing with Lyman slugs without any shoulder pad. 48 reloads was a little hard on the shoulder. I use a recipe out of the Lyman manual. Federal gold metal case, waa12 wad and SR4675. Was the very first load I tried and figured I could find a better one so went through about 200 rnds before I figured out I wasn’t going to better it. 2 1/2” 3 shot groups from the bench and I couldn’t find anything better. For the rest of the testing I wore a 3/4 “ shoulder pad. I still felt those 48 loads 3 days later. Only scope cut I ever got was from that gun, 5 rnds as fast as I could shoot at 100. Lesson there somewhere.
