Back in the 1980's I shot over 20 Sitka Blacktail deer with my 22-250 loaded with 55gr Varminter bullets @ 3660fps

Max range was 150 yards every shot was centered neck resulted in instant DRT with a 1/4" hole in 2" hole out only thinking holding the head to the body was the hide.

Absolutely devastating

I've shot deer with a 22-250 loaded with 70gr Speer semi-spitzers. They all died, but no faster than with any other cartridge.

Many cartridges are devastating on deer.
The 22-250 is no more devastating or puts deer down faster than all other cartridges as stated in a previous post...lol.

Late to the party but to the question of the "ultimate deer rifle"?, whatever you can hit the point of aim consistently at the maximum range you intend to shoot. The action, calibre (as long as legal) the optics etc do not matter. For me, the ultimate deer rifle is also just the ultimate HUNTING rifle (all big game) period. That would be my Ruger No1 in .338 with a 3X9 Burris compact scope. Have shot, moose, elk, deer, bears, sheep and have never lost an animal that I pulled the trigger on. I would suspect that my 1885 highway in .270 Gibbs with set trigger and Burris signature 3X9 would be just as good, just haven't shot any game with it. I like my .338 too much. BTW, I have no doubt that a 22-250 would smoke a deer with the right bullet and range (have one of those in a Ruger No1 Heavy barrel as well with 6X18 Burris scope) but not legal for deer in Alberta). Makes short work of Gophers out to......however far you can see them with hollow points.

Ultimately what is best, is an opinion and is decided upon mostly by personal experience. And not necessarily vast personal experience. If you have only ever used a sling shot and are extremely proficient with it… then you may decide that it is the ultimate.
Reading this thread is ultimately useless unless you want someone else’s opinion of their ultimate.

The question was not "what CAN be a deer rifle" it was "What is the ultimate deer rifle". A .458 min or .460 "better-be" CAN be used on deer but few can handle the recoil well enough to shoot them accurately so they are not the "ultimate" deer rifle (as an example).

If people can not ask for and receive OPINIONS from others, what IS the point of a forum like this???. EVERYTHING posted is an opinion for others to consider and accept or reject based on their own wants/needs/OPINIONS. There is nothing AT ALL wrong with asking what others consider to be the "best" or "ultimate", hopefully with a reason for that opinion. Doesn't mean that the OP has to accept any or all opinions offered. If a thread like this is "ghey", how SHOULD it be conducted if the OP is looking for the opinions of others for his consideration on what constitutes the "ultimate" deer rifle ???. Perhaps I missed your point, and if I did I apologize and would like some clarification. In my previous post, I posted what I feel is the criteria for the ultimate deer rifle then shared what that means TO ME. I suspect that MOST guys would reject MY choice of deer rifle and that is fine, I am not suggesting that everyone should be hunting with a Ruger No1 OR that everyone should be hunting deer with a .338. True experts in their field go to the grave still learning. Self professed "experts" go to their grave as amateurs because they quit learning years ago. You should embrace threads like this, you just might learn something.

you could take the bow to sit over bait in sask, but I'd take Grendel, and I took a dozen trophy mule deer with a bow so I guess the Grendel will do there as well although my walls full enough of them so my money would likely go to something else, maybe a caribou or Dahl, or both?...to which I'd take the Grendel, 6 species so far, may as well rack up 10-12, still have a couple easy ones to go in AB (elk/antelope) and maybe a cougar too would get me to 9 before I need to aim for a dozen lol, before an extra dollar hunt I'd just make sure I ran the gongs out ahead of time and put a bit extra shooting before hunt to max that confidence...that's about it, heck a guy ran around and did the NA slam with a 30-30 did he not? I would skip the big bears with the Grendel but most of the ungulates inside 300 no prob and a bunch of them to 450 no prob, for a long time bowhunter...if you can't get er done with a Grendel then you suck

I'd still take my 14" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 338JDJ #2 but would also grab a 24" barreled Husqvarna chambered in 270Wby and/or my 26" barreled Rem 700 in 300RUM

The Contender will be in my Eberlestock M1 Mainframe pack I'll carry one of the others on my shoulder with a sling or in my hand .

Like this I have a scabbard between the frame and the zipped on drybag yes thats what you can do with a 28" OAL carbine.

LOL I only consider it concealed carry when I'm packing this rifle in it...

I carry two rifles all of the time this last year it was mostly a 14" barreled Contender in 17HMR for grouse in the pack
