6.5-06 ai.

I shoot 6.5-06 with 140 match bullets and find it to be an outstanding chambering for superb accuracy, with moderate recoil. I have considered making it an AI, but I really do not see the need. My ballistic research suggests it would not be much 'improved'.

My comment would be a 6.5 prc or 6.5/284 if you’re set on a 6.5. Brass is easy.
Or a 270 win if you really want to be lazy.
The AI is neat but more of a pita and pricy considering what you gain imo.

Amen I don’t think I’ll ever do another AI. Ratchety feeding and fireforming ain’t for me. No trimming is nice though.

I think I would skip the AI part. The standard 6.5-06 feeds nicely and will outperform a .264 Win Mag with 24 inch barrels.

My 264 win mag likes 61gr (near max) of H1000 are we talking about the same case?

I will edit that was with 160gr I was up to 65 with 140.

Total water case capacity to the mouth of the case, not just your favorite powder charge with a bullet. It's literally like comparing the .30-06 to the .300 Win Mag.

Yeah, you’re right. I forgot his chubby the 264 was. I obviously need to get it out of the safe a bit more.

While the 65-06 will not equal the 264, loaded to the same pressures, it does very well and will push 140's close to 3000 fps. With both cartridges using 4831, for example, the 264 will beat the 6.5-06 by about 150 fps. With a powder which allows near 100% loading density in the 65-06, the 264 will likely do better than that. I would also not bother with the AI.

My 264 went places my 6.5-06 could not go. Both had 26" barrels, and the difference
using 140 grain bullets was just over 200 fps.

But.......58 grains of powder in the 6.5-06 and 75 grains in the 264 Win Mag.
[different powders, obviously]

The standard 6.5-06 is a very fine chambering. I would not bother with the AI. Dave.

Ive owned both, still have my 6.5-06. Both with 24 inch barrels (standard at the time for the 264). Still have the 6.5. 264 was a good cartridge, but with the pwders i had at the time it didnt exceed the 6.5 by more than 100 fps in my rifles. I may put together another now that there are so many slower powders options available. Though last time the opportunity arose I built a 6.5 stw instead, which was a big step up from the 06 based round. Fwiw. - dan

A 6.5 STW is interesting, there are alot of applications for it's use... but then the 7 STW pretty much covers those also. I can see me building a 6.5 STW at some point.

I've played around with a 26 Nosler enough to know that it's too much powder under a 6.5mm bullet. Very few good powders slow enough for this overbore round

I was on an stw kick at one point. Started with the 7 in the 80's, and added a 6.5, 358 and 25 to the stable. Splitting hairs, but when youre on a tangent, you're on a tangent. - dan
