Tipton Best Gun Vise..... thoughts

So I just missed the wild wednesday sale on the vise, $79.99 vs reg price of $179.99. I'm going to keep watching for it to come back on sale but I am still looking for peoples opinions on it. Thanks
 
It's ok for $80 dont thunk I would pay more than that though. It work ok for mounting scopes or using to run cleaning rods through. It hold the rifles fairly secure but I'm sure there is better options out there .
 
Personally I think that a good work bench vise that can be fitted with blocks of wood and rubber 'soft jaws' is going to be more useful than a Tipton cradle thing.

Then again, I use a dedicated professional ski waxing/tuning table + vise to work on some firearms at times, so YMMV...
 
As HeliMD said, its a decent buy at $80, don't do it at $180. Does work well for scope installs and other light duty work, and can be easily moved when not in use.
 
If it's the one I am thinking of They are often seen at gun shows for about 50 bucks under many names. Good for light duty use , marginal for bore cleaning , as they are to light to hold a rifle stable when you get a tight patch. But much easier to take to the range than the vice from your work bench. If one was to mount on a bench it would likely be work for most things. I have 2.

Like What? , If you give you Opinion give your options, for the same price the OP suggested /bought at.
 
I have done like others stated I have 2 vices set up with soft jaws. One wood vise mounted to the front of my bench with wood jaws. One conventional vise on the top of my bench with soft rubber jaws. They both hold a rife more solid than the Tipton. I still use the Tipton as well though. If you have the $80 to spend on it go for it if not go to a local garage sale or flea market and pick up some old vices. The one nice thing about the Tipton is it has a few easy adjustments that make leveling the action on both axes to mount a scope. So I usually use it for that .
 
I came across a deal on one a while ago and got it. Have only used it a handful of times for scope and optic mounts, as well as some bore-sighting to zero said optics. Otherwise... its a dust collector.
 
I have the Tipton Ultra Vise and ordered the folding stand to go with it. Works very well and much better than trying to work off the tail gate of your truck out at the range.
 
I have one. It’s okay for cleaning rifles, but not much good for anything else. Use some plywood dogs or get rubber inserts to pad a regular machinists vise and you’ll be much happier. A padded universal vise form lee valley is great too, though pretty expensive.
