Hi Folks,

Really considering purchasing one of these rifles in 375 Ruger ( For fun, and eventual hunt in BC / Alaska)

From what I can tell, the only difference is the stock

Alaskan -> Hogue Overmolded https://www.ruger.com/products/HawkeyeAlaskan/models.html
Guide Gun -> Green Mountain Laminate https://www.ruger.com/products/guideGun/models.html

There are no LGS near me with either that I can put my hands on.

Is there a preference to which stock is "better" or other differences I failed to determine between those two?

Thanks!

Hogue over-molded stocks suck.

I never understood the appeal either… I can’t find any practically benefit of the rubber unless you where using it like a bludgeon. Plus when your hands/gloves are wet you have next to zero grip.

The Houge will be lighter… but. I’d take the laminate and you get those nifty spacers.

Hogue stocks are just terrible. The only way I'd get the Alaskan is if I intended to replace the stock anyways. Someone paid me $50 for a Hogue take-off once and I feel like I ripped him off.

There’s a decent utilitarian stock hiding under the hogue if you attack it with a wood rasp. It’ll be ugly but work real well. It’s better than the green and pink plywood or whatever they come with now.

Interesting. I love the Hogue stock on mine.

Me too. I use it in really rough terrain and its my best stock for my uses. I have a laminate stock but I took it off. It was heavier and a lot more slippery in hand. I have used skateboard tape in the past on slippery stocks, but the hogue didn't need it. To each their own. My Alaskan can get easy 1" groups at 100 with the Hogue so no need to fix the unbroken.

do you use it in the wet / cold conditions? Do you lose grip?

Yes. I hunt in the NWT. I hunt very rough. The stock stays grippy up to about -2 (the coldest I have used it in as Sept can be quite mild here. ) I cant comment on colder use. As for wetness, I notice zero grip loss. Canoe and boat hunting I do a lot of.

They stay grippy in much colder weather as well. I’ve also never noticed any grip loss when wet either, it’s literally the point of rubberizing handles of tools, knives and stocks. Either way I like my hogue stock, certainly not the stiffest out there but a decent utilitarian stock for sure

Not a fan of the Hogue either. Too grippy when you're shouldering, it catches on your clothes. The wide target style forend feels out of place on a hunting rifle. I replaced mine with a McMillan.

I normally dont like wide forearms on any hunting rifle, but with the recoil of the 375 Ruger, I find it gives me more grip than the thinner laminate stock I tried. (Plus the rubber is grippy anyway)
As for the gun sticking to clothes, I just haven't found that to be the case for me. Probably just different shaped shoulders 😁. Due to my Spongebob Squarepants shape, the gun has a hard time staying on my shoulder....

I haven't hunted in the extreme cold with it but I have hunted with it in the rain and temps down to -20 or so. I love the grip and the shape of it. I don't have a scope on my 416 so it's pretty light but yet the recoil is pretty manageable and I think that's in part due to the stock. I will agree it's ugly but it fits me so well.

I'd put a WTB on the EE and see what comes up.

375 Rugers seem to show up there on a regular basis after the "fun" wears off.
