360 Buckhammer

It's very nice to see one of the original wildcat cartridges dating back from around 1900 being factory loaded today. The 360 Buckhammer is just a modern
version of the 35-30 which has been used with boolits in weights up to 300 gr in rifles suited to the 30-30 case. Some 500 meter Silhouette shooters were getting great scores back in the 70's with re barreled Rem 788 30-30 actions.

If Winchester had introduced the 35-30 back in those early days chambered in the model 1894, they would've far surpassed the 35 Rem chambered rifles from then, on up to today I reckon. The Henry rifle looks decent, but I'd be horny fer a new Winchester 94 short rifle in 360 BH anyday. :yingyang:

A rimmed cartridge, really? That limits the options. Remington doesn't even have a lever or single shot rifle currently. Weird!?

Quite a bit less case capacity and a rimmed base.

Closer to the 35-30 of old, which is simply the full-length 30-30 necked up to 35 Cal. The 360 Buckhammer is about 0.250" shorter to meet certain hunting regs, and thus has a fair bit less case capacity as well.

I was going by the advertised velocities that Remington puts out. Probably a bit optimistic.

Yes it is - pure marketing. Even the name Buck "hammer" name made me chuckle. Like the "Hammer of Thor" out to 25 yds.......

It's really just about 10% more energy than the 357 Maximum and 10% less then the 35 Rem.

A lot are claiming 2200fps with 200s. While not exactly the "Hammer of Thor", I'd take that any day over a slug gun.
 
From Remington's claims it should equal (or even exceed) factory 35 Remington. Due to being loaded to higher pressure.
 
Allows people in straight wall states to hunt with a rifle caliber in a lever action that is not a 45/70 I guess. Wouldn’t most of those who want such a thing be using a 44 mag or 357? I guess it depends on if that segment of the market buys in

Comparisons to the 350 legend seem like wishful thinking; that round targets the segment of the straight wall market that uses semi autos and bolts it seems

I realize that but it's quite the commitment for one firearm manufacturer. Winchester is not going to chamber it. Ruger/Marlin are direct competitors so unless it takes off like wildfire (which it's not) i doubt they will chamber it. Rossi?? You're leaving out the entire AR market which is huge in the States. After the whole financial problem they just went through, thats the cartridge they come out with!?
 
I wouldn't count on other companies not making it, the straight wall market is huge. And Remington Ammo and Remarms are seperate companies.
 
Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Maryland are big whitetail markets. I think it will sell well and Ruger will eventually chamber it.

Alot of straight wall states have an older population of hunters not into the AR platform. Look how well the 3030 sells in other states where it's allowed. This gives the option of a traditional lever gun which is highly in demand.
 
I picked up the new G&A Mable for the article on this round. Accuracy was pretty crappy but the average speed for the 200 gr Corelokt was just over 2100fps. The 180 grain is supposed to come in a shade under 2400 and it sounds like federal will be making ammo and there will be a 150 gr option available at some point.

I actually like the idea of the round. The fact that it’s a .358 it key and the fact that it is pressure rated to 50000 will get those velocities advertised. Not sure if it would fit with length but it would be a hoot in a Rossi 92. I’ve got a BLR takedown stainless in 358 Win and a beautiful Win 94 in 356 Win so I don’t need one but a lighter weight carry lever in the new 360 would be cool.
