Carcano shooting

Shot my 1942 berretta today for the first time.

using ppu FMJBT 139grn factory ammo

as expected, it shot approx 12 inches high at 50M. I did have the sight buried in the v.
these bullets without pulling them measured .263 to .264 all holes were clean with no signs of tumbling once I get my dies i will pull a bullet to measure it.
the group was about 3 inches with one being 4 inches away and to the right which might have been me.

decided i like these rifles after shooting it and will order another one or two

That's an excellent group for undersize bullets. Have you measured the bore????

yes, I slugged the bore and its .267.5 the ammo i bought was the only ammo I could find. bore does look excellent with no rust or pitting it may not have been fired much.

guy beside me also had one of these. he was shooting the same ammo with very similar results he had not measured his bore but said he would and let me know. his was also marstar rifle in best shape I've seen yet

My hat is off to you, for me that is just to much recoil to handle, without developing a severe flinch.

Excellent cartridge though. At the velocities you're achieving with that bullet weight, you're going past those achieved with a 338-06 with similar weight bullets and approaching 338Win Mag velocities/energy. Very potent at point of impact.

Even the big Swedes put a muzzle brake on their Swedish Gevär m/1940 (Karabiner 98k) in 8x63. Apologies for the brief hijack.

Got mine, 41 XIX Brescia, the "41" is poorly struck and looks like "11". Now to order dies and pick up some Prvi ammo, was holding off in case I got a tomato stake. Bore shows little to no use.

Not really a highjack. Comparing rifles to others is par for the course of most threads and often very interesting and informative.

Nice looking rifle. I'm glad GNG has cleaned up their act. I'm almost thinking Claven2 got a screwed up order. I would have expected GNG to take those rifles back and fix their mistake.

I have one coming from Marstar.

Claven's issues with quality were the reason I ordered from Marstar, whom I believe was the initial importer of all these rifles, and the others purchased in bulk from them or went together on the initial order??

I kept telling myself that I didn't need or want another Carcano of any mark as I have a Type I, made for Japan and chambered for the 6.5 Japanese, with the Arisaka type triggerguard and mag well. Nice rife, shoots well with .264 open base bullets, under 3 inches, better with .268 Hornady 160 grain round nose/flat base, Under 2 inches if I do my part.

I can handle a few dings, but it's the bore I'm most worried about. We'll see how it looks when it gets here.

Fwiw, based on correspondence from GNG, it's abundantly clear to me they don't take rifles back. And I would say likely 2 orders back to back that were well sub-par.

It's a matter of opinion though. People can look at the photos as they came out of the box and decide what they think about whether the rifles should have been graded as good or better.

At least I was able to make both functional and somewhat presentable, but I worked far too hard to get them there.

The marstar rifles, by far, have been looking better in average based on what's been posted on cgn.

Looking at my 1941 Carbine, I am skeptical that it has gain twist rifling, looks constant to me from both ends.

Run a cleaning rod with a tight patch in from both ends. Measure the length of rod to make one full rod revolution.

If you get different readings from the breech vs muzzle, it's gain twist.

Fyi, if gain twist, it will measure around 1:12 from the breech and around 1:10 from the muzzle. In reality, right at the muzzle, it's really about 1:8, but.your reading is over an accelerating twist over 10 inches, so it "looks" slower twist than it is.

A reasonable appraisal of the situation. Given the number of guns shipped on the first day back from our Christmas vacation. I believe all the rifles shared here were shipped on the same day. I’ve already implied our mistake in my previous response.

Based on this correspondence, it wasn’t my understanding that you wanted to return the rifle. You said: "I didn't intend to resolve anything with you. $366 shipped is a drop in the bucket"
Are you changing your mind or did I misinterpret?
Or perhaps there is some confusion because there is another dealer advertising them as "as is, where is", so you may have mixed up the two ads. Our return policy is clearly written.

I'm happy to post the whole correspondence chain if you like, not just one cherry picked statement several notes into my trying to resolve things. I don't think you actually want that, but your move - just let me know.

I stand by my assessment you would not have taken the rifle back. My interpretation is that by posting a review, I am not entitled to a return because I damaged your business reputation by posting the product I was shipped on a forum and disclosing it came from gng.

I don’t know what more I can offer than a refund. But let’s let the interested party confirm that’s what he wants to do. He hasn’t answered the question.

While I appreciate the offer, I've now put enough effort into cleaning up the gun that I'm just keeping it to fill the hole while a source a better example.

I sincerely appreciate the public offer to consider a return.

Stepping up in open forum. It does mean something. Bravo!!

I’m just reiterating our policy, it seemed necessary given the renewed public accusations.

I’m glad you consider the matter resolved, but it is not my preferred outcome; I wish I could have saved you those hours of work with a better rifle, which I could have quickly done if you contacted us upon opening the box and observing our mistake.
