blr vs M88

I love my blr, doesn't have a great trigger but it's some handy rifle. My suggestion, fwiw, would be too handle both and see what you prefer.
 
Personally the 88 hands down. A lot of people like the BLR but I'm not one of them. Too muzzle light for offhand use, triggers are usually awful, nightmare if you have to disassemble one. The Winchester 88 has a decent trigger, holds nice offhand, one piece stock. Usually shoot as good as a bolt gun. I own a few magnums, 338 winmag being the largest and I find the BLR in .308 unpleasant to shoot off the bench. Much prefer to crank a few from the 338 than the little BLR. Others may disagree.
 
The 88 is my choice, as well. They just feel "right" in my hands.
Tend to be very accurate as well. While the 88 is a challenge to
disassemble and reassemble, the DLR is a nightmare, IMHO. Dave.
 
I’ve looked over a friend’s BLR and his M88 closely, personally I like the look of the blr more but I’d take the 88 I think. Just on the ease of disassembly alone, although the takedown blr’s interest me. If money wasn’t a factor I’d likely buy both lol.
 
I had a model 88 for a while. I found that in my natural one hand carry position, I would often accidently move the safety to off . The safety seemed to be right at that balance point.
I sold it for that reason. Has anyone else experienced that issue ?
 
Just let me say, I have taken both apart & re-assembled them... and while the 88 is real pain to re-assemble, The BLR is just a plain morphydite...for the life of me, companies have been building quality lever guns for 150 yrs and I cannot understand why Miroku would manufacture something as useless as these BLR's are. That gearing system is problem #1 but that assortment of trigger parts is equally unjust to saddle a customer with.

They must be alright when working right but damn if you ever need to tear one down have 3 weeks of spare time and a limitless amount of patience when you want to re-assemble.

I keep hearing this all over the internet... however, I have used BLR's off and on my whole life and have never had to strip one down to that extent. I currently only have two, both 1977 Pre-81 hang Mag rifles in .308 & .358... they have been shot alot, never failed, put down a semi-truck load of game. The complexity of a BLR would never deter me from buying one.

Kind of the same thing with the Win 94, no one wants to take those apart......but do you really ever have to?
 
BLR. I like the 20in barrel on the 308.

I have never had to take it apart in the field. You would have to drop it in a muddy riverbank or something to need to do that. That being said I now currently own takedown models to facilitate cleaning.
 
Now add a Savage 99 into the mix and this conversation gets a lot more interesting. Otherwise, I will take the BLR due to the fact that their stocks don't crack like the Winchesters' and it is still possible to get magazines. The Henry Long Ranger is a beauty as well.
 
Have had a pre 64 Model 88 in .308 Win & 3 different BLR's in .308 Win. Have none of those now.

Between the two I'd take a BLR. Newer model with flush mount magazine.

As the Savage 99 has been added to the discussion in the above post, I'd have to say between the 3, I'd go with the Savage 99. I still have one, a 99F, pre mil serial #; mfg 1958 and in .308 Win.

I like both rifles,the Blr is a complicated rack and pinion gear system and the timing needs to be right,not close or ok,but perfect.ive worked on a few and they are a firearm i would not want to take apart often.i still own a blr.308 and its a steel reciever model not aluminum.i didn't care for the brand new blr aluminum reciever models.the 88 is a good all around rifle,I don't like the safety either as other said its right in Ttt balance spot and I've had my issues with it.
