Night Vision Chat Thread - Ask Us Anything

I understand that by the very nature of the devices, the google mounted devices have to shine light into the user's eyes. Looking at some digital night vision video recordings, it seems the glow is fairly prominent when viewed from the side of the user. (these are videos taken a few meters from the NOD users). Is there any signature when seen at some distance? Do people wearing NODs have a glow visible to other NOD users?

I was wondering what the difference was in the Katana Pro VS the Standard model. Thanks for any help

Only the lenses are different. All of our "Standard" device offerings have lenses made by Optronics Engineering in Israel. The Pro models feature US Milspec optics made by either Carson Industries or Edmund Optics. The Pro models will have increased contrast, off-axis flare reduction, and perfect rectilinear performance.

Unfortunately, no.

What you're seeing via high-sensitivity IR cameras is exaggerated. That being said, when viewing with un-aided vision or even under analog night vision, there will be a faint glow but past 20m, it is not noticeable. I should probably note that the splash is only visible at specific angles (45 degrees from the direction of the device user). If the user is directly facing you, most of that splash will be covered by the device itself.
If back-splash is of concern, all of our devices ship with rubber eyecups that clip onto the back of the device eyepieces and contain any illumination backsplash against the user's face.

Sorry if I missed this - what is the general water/weather resistance for CH assembled units like the PVS14?

Hope you guys are doing well!
Thanks dude!
Our Pro monoculars and binoculars are all IP67 and submersion rated.

How about you guys put together like a best under 3k package for us :)
Cheap night vision isn't good and good night vision isn't cheap.
As users of night vision who have been through the very bottom of the barrel all the way to where we are now, trust us when we say that you will save yourself the inevitable disappointment if you just spent a little more. Our systems are the perfect sweet spot of performance and leave nothing on the table.
Take a look at our PVS-14 Standard monocular, they have the same high performance intensifier as our Pro monoculars, inside an industry-standard housing that accepts all common milspec parts, and can be upgraded down the road if desired.

Thanks for the notes above. I have a lot of respect for the level of knowledge and service you bring to the table - I just wish your portfolio was a little more palatable for repeat business ;) You'd be a shoe in for favorite vendor.

Have you ever come across anything in the bottom of the barrel range, at bottom of the barrel prices, that would be good enough for something like airsoft or just as a toy?

Plenty of options ranging from Amazon digital night vision, to Sionyx Aurora, to old Gen2 technology without autogating. Unfortunately I can't, in good conscience, recommend any of them. "Good enough" is a highly subjective, user-driven thing. I've seen dudes show up to games with Gen1 night vision and they still had a great time. On the flip side of that coin, we bring night vision camping and being able to look up at the stars and see the Milky Way so clearly and vividly is an experience in itself. Also sneaking up on the park rangers. haha. Basically they are toys. Maybe it's a mindset thing.

For the airsoft perspective, I will say that there's nothing more disappointing than dropping $2k on old Gen2 tech without autogating, rolling up to an airsoft game, saying "wow I can see in the dark", then get completely destroyed by dudes using modern night vision and high-powered IR lights overwhelming the crap out of the non-gated intensifier.

Finally ordered a monocular after all these years. Thanks fellas. So if I understand correctly are these to ship by Jan 31st at the latest?

I'm looking to set up a shotgun for NV, how does the LE117-IR hold up to recoil? Any experience using it on such a platform?

Thanks,
Ryan
Ryan - we had it on an M590A1 for a bit and it's still kickin.
