Can you believe how EASILY I found an image of lady justice balancing the weight of a firearm? In an ideal world I would photoshop A Glock17 on one side and the CZ on the other but I simply don't have the time.
They're both reliable firearms and both incredible work horses. I would say they're built to a similar standard and both have a similar reputation (Glock of course being more popular but only for name sake). One big thing you should look at is striker fired: Glock or hammer: CZ SP01. I know guys that have CZsp1's with super accuracy for competition sport shooting. They're great pistols and very accurate but I also know guys who shoot in the same divisions with Glock. Again, I'd say a pretty even scale. I know for a fact that the CZ parts either replacement or aftermarket upgrades are more expensive and harder to come by than Glock.
I prefer the aesthetic of the CZ but I like my glock better because of the finger grooves. You can't get rubber finger groove grips for the SP01.

Depends on what you are getting the gun for.
G17 would be more in line with CZ75 while SP-01 would compare to G34. As your first gun, you would be better off with G17 as it's cheaper to own, plenty of holsters, sights, magazines and such everywhere you look. You'll save money and lots of time going with G17.
Then, when you get competitive, you'll def get more handguns.

Hmmmm...very tough choice! I have a G17 and a CZ 75B and love them both. They are some of of the best in the world, inexpansive, reliable and evil look. Away from plastic VS steel and different price range. Glock is nowhere better than CZ. Infact it's flame is quite cheap made. SP01 is a better verson of 75 and it out perform many so call big brother and the price is right, hot looking gun. Buy them both brother.

There are quite a number of good handguns out there. The best advice would be to try as many as you can. Not everyone likes the same thing. And when it comes to handgun shooting small differences can make you either love or hate a particular gun.
For example the Glock. A very good gun but I hate the trigger on them. (and they have no visual style, yuck) Some people love them for a number of good reasons.
You can't possibly go wrong with any Glock....and I shoot nothing but reloads in both mine to boot. Take em down in 3 seconds, clean them in minutes, drop them on the floor, chuck them in sand, water etc......all the torture tests are out there....nuff said!

The fact that Glock's are a dime a dozen shouldn't deter anyone from getting one. It's not like driving a car or buying a house in the suburbs. They're really great, all the reviews aren't bull####.
I do however, totally agree they have almost ZERO aesthetic appeal. At the price, you can't beat what you get. Especially now a days with the stronger loonie. I'm not saying there aren't better pistols.
When it comes down to it, what can you afford and what can you try. I had a LOT of handgun experience before I bought my first one, I shot dozens of semi-auto's and at least a half dozen revolvers. Ultimately I chose Glock because I wanted to practice with a firearm that was similar/the same as my service pistol. If it wasn't for that I would have NOT bought .40 I would have went with 9mm and certainly would have bought a Beretta inox. That, to me is my ideal aesthetic pistol, exposed barrel, delicious!
