9.3x62 vs the rest

The 9.3x62 gets rave reviews around the globe as hard hitting medium bore. Our very own Ted calls it “a 375 that holds 5 down”.

I own one, but I’ve yet to fire it in anger. I’m posing this question to people who have used them for extensively….are you gaining anything over a 30-06 with 200 or 220 partitions? Have you noticed a real world difference in effect on big game?

I realize the 06 might be light for the outlier bison, just looking to rationalize the extra guns and components in the cabinet.

Real world experience please, if I want ballistic bs I’ll Google ron spomer

I think those Husqvarna rifles are undervalued. They just don't make them like that anymore.

Not real certain if there are many "cheap" Husqvarna's still out there? I bought one several years ago from TradeEx - is a Model 649, I think - so built on a commercial M98 FN action, by Husqvarna. Was a posting on CGN some years ago about someone with a "Husqvarna Mauser" - originally was chambered in 9.3x57, I suspect - a small ring Mauser - whomever reamed out the chamber did nothing to the magazine, apparently, and factory 9.3x62 ammo would not fit into that rifle's magazine - although it would chamber properly.

I also have a "STIGA" in 30-06 - so was built on a Small Ring Husqvarna - likely a 640 series action - material had been removed behind the lower bolt lug recess, to fit a longer 30-06 length magazine, then the barrelled receiver had been "proof tested" - apparently in Denmark, to prove that the result was still adequate for 30-06 pressures. I think they added a longer than normal "free-bore" area to that chamber - to reduce the pressure somewhat.

Hi! I have a 270 win using 130 gr Nosler Partition. When I shoot moose or deer, I find the bullet on the skin on the other side of the animal. When I shoot my 9.3 x 62 with 286 gr Nosler partition, the bullet goes right through and the hole is "ball golf size"!
It think it is the effect of "momentum"! I heavier bullet just plow right through!

Why do I like it? No tracking or, if there is tracking there is a very large blood trail to follow!

Intersuplus bought a lot of TradeEx's stock when TradeEx closed up shop. They've got a good selection of these older rifles.

Is a thing that I noticed about Husqvarna rifles - for whatever reason, I think there is SAME model number, but different Mauser actions that were used, in some chamberings - Small Ring versus Large Ring - at least I thought so - example might be Model 648 - I had Small Ring one in 8x57JS - I think some also made using m98 actions. Might be an important distinction to some - maybe not to others - just be aware what it is that you are buying ...

+1 on that! I saw my accoubon bullet explode on a big deer shoulder! (270 win 130 gr). I changed them right away for Nosler partition and never had that kind of problem again!

As well as Great North Guns. Bought a 7 RM with HVA made action off a friend very reasonable price also. I think I bought it too cheap, but full resale price isn't overly high. I've heard them compared favorably to the pre-64 Winchester 70. But I wouldn't be surprised if an HVA shoots more accurately.

I sure love mines, so far only one moose was harvested with one of my 9.3, and I have to say it was spectacular, not that my 30-06 didn’t kill well on moose, it did and many times, but never like that one bull I shot with my 9.3!!

My friend shot his last moose with his and he says he could see it get lifted off it's feet as it was knocked over.

He's got heart and diabetes issues. I don't think he'll ever go moose hunting again. Can't ride his quad any more due to poor circulation in his hands.

Old Douglas was a big advocate of the walrus hunt he kept suggesting it to me as a good budget “ adventure” hunt . I can’t speak to the bullet but I remember him using a full stock cz 550 9.3 to slay his.

What a character

LOL! That ammo box! I’d almost buy it as a novelty item, although at today’s ammo prices perhaps not!

I haven't shot anything but paper with mine, but it's a bit rough on the shoulder and teeth off the bench, shoots sub moa at 100m with 286gr at near 4000ft/lbs of energy, it's a good cartridge and easy to load for.
This one was born as a 9.3x57, a member here reamed it out to x62, he did a good job, maybe better then alot of Smith's lol.

Mine is a little ignorant off the bench, but at 7lb 11oz that's no surprise.

I've use the PPU ammo on a 6 point buck at about 100 yards. The shot flipped him right over as he went down. I haven't used it yet on something bigger - like an Elk or Moose; or Bison. But that's really what I bought it for.

Anyone using the Speer 270gr? Lots of people swear by them in the x57.

I remember Doug saying it was his favourite bullet in the x62. He shot a walrus with it I think.

He used one to take a huge bull moose with me one time. Late evening and he couldn’t see the sights on his bow. Grabbed my old 9.3X62 rifle and pasted it.

The recovered Speer 270 travelled through about thirty inches after breaking two ribs going in. The picture is on here somewhere, and would be perfect for an advertisement.

Don’t listen to those who say it is too soft.

Ted

Here's the picture of the previously-mentioned 270 Speer that came out of the big bull moose Doug shot.
