S&W m&p 40 stripped the bolt head on the rear sight..

Well, the title about says it all.Have put about 700 rounds through the pistol,and it was still shooting to the right.Maybe it was the gun,maybe it was me.So I figured if it was bad technique,at least it was getting consistent.So I decided to adjust the rear site.I'm assuming a guy would turn out the screw,drift the sight,tighten,and go from there.Got to the loosen the screw part and stripped the head:mad:I thought it was the right allen wrench,but I thought wrong.Has anyone done this,or know a guy that did this??and how to remedy the situation,or is it a trip to a gunsmith for me???If anyone has some insight or shame to hand down,fire away.
 
Can you get a larger allen key jammed in to loosen it?

Otherwise, if it's accessible, you could use a Dremel with cutoff wheel to cut a slot in it for a flat blade screw driver. You might want to look into those stripped screw removers they sell at CT if nothing else works.
 
Thanks guys,I'll give it a try...I was hoping there was a way to quick fix it.Funny thing is,I wasnt reefing on the wrench,firm pressure,firm pressure &tick,stripped.The reason I had'nt monkeyed with it is I wanted something left for a gunsmith to get at.Time to see if it gets worse before it gets better.
 
You sure may wanna stop by a reputable gunsmith before you monkey around with your gun, get a pro opinion, I'm not a gunsmith.

S&W are warrantied for life, this should not have happened. Contact a warranty center and make arrangements to send them the slide and have them fix it. If they make a mess of it then you get a new sight or slide.

Gee that felt good!

Well, I almost did the same thing. It's an AMERICAN pistol. Metric allen keys "almost" fit, but will strip if you are insistant. LOL

Remove it with an "extractor" (Can Tire) and then buy yourself a few spares which will justify your trip to pick up a 0.25 cent screw!

Don't feel bad, you aren't the first to do it! Although most peole don't have the guts to admit it!
 
Once again,thanks for the input.I'll mull over doing it myself,but if not ,I'll go see the 'smith recommended.As for sending it back to S&W,I feel it was probably more my doing than anything,so I'll wear it.
