Hey guys, Im looking to get a .22lr thats accurate for target shooting from 100-200yards. I have never bought one before and havent herd much talk of good .22lr on this section. Im looking for something in the 500$ range, i looked on wholesale sports and theres a tonne of heavy barrled .22lr's. Can anyone shead some light on what accurate 22lr's are out there?

Much appreciated,

accurate 22

Target Sports had the old Hart House 22's for sale cheap- BSA's and Anshutz very accurate guns. Although beat up - they would respond to refinishing - and 22's never wear out! My 1950 BSA ISU rifle still shoots one hole groups at 50 and with no wind same at 100. Trick is to never clean the bore - The grooves and lands on 22's are not deep so cleaning rods do more damage than the bullets.

I use an old Brno #4 I bought on the EE... same idea... older, quality .22LR still shoots great... and maybe even better than most new ones...

The CZ 452 line is supposed to be incredible... but I've never shot one...

22lr probably not the best choice for 100-200. Any particular reason it needs to be a 22lr? A .223 is very affordable to shoot and much better for longer ranges. If you are sure 22lr is what you want buy either a used brno#4 or #3 or a new(er) cz and you will be happy.

Cheers

Or if you want a rimfire consider a Savage in .17 HMR

It would be just a cheap way of working on my shooting and punching paper/gophers. I dont think match .223 ammo is conciderably less than .308 match so i might as well shoot .308. Any word on the savage II out there it looks decent.

Get the .22, you can shoot all day long for 20 dollars, A box of t hose .17s are about the same for 50 bullets if I remember correctly,

I just bought a 10\22 and put a new stock and new bull barrel on it, and its a nice shooting little gun, very accurate, you might have to jump through hoops to get a barrel though, i guess i just lucked out, I honestly find it funner to shoot farther with this .22 than my 22-250, I dont know why, but it sure is fun!

I wanted a .22LR to train my wife, sons and myself with during the off season. I needed something that looked and felt like my M700 Varmint gitters in both .223 and PSS in .308. I wanted something that would have similar optics, mounts and cheekpiece (Eagle Brand).

So I bought a CZ452 Varmint with a heavy (really a medium profile) 20" barrel. Then I strapped on an Eagle cheekpiece just like my M700 rigs. I ordered a pair of 11mm to Weaver base adapters from Brooks himself (just google "Brooks CZ452") and then slapped on some Millett Angle-Loc rings to hold my 3W.1337Tactical.com Leupold LR/T knockoff 3.5 x 10 x 40mm Mark4M1 wannabe scope. This scope ran me about $ 160 give or take, but it's a dead ringer for the Leupold LR/T series of scopes. Yes, it looks like a real tactical rig, but set up for inside 100m shooting. That's all this scope has to do. Hey, it passes the "Box Test" for repeatability so it's good enough for my needs at 100m and shorter. Gophers too!!

Looks pretty close to the real thing. All I am doing is practicing my prone and benchrest and other shooting positions at 50m and 100m shooting at my home range outside Thornbury, ON.

Try a bunch of .22LR's out and see what works for your own needs. Keep training well !

Peace be to journey !

I've got a savage mkII for this same reason. With quality ammo it shoots very well, and although 100m is pushing it, it's still good practice. Quality .22 ammo costs more, but it's still dirt cheap comparatively.
My only complaints so far would be with the stock, I added a karsten cheekpiece to get a higher cheekweld, and will likely swap out to more of a prone-style stock in future.

Not too much precision with a .22 Long Rifle beyond 100 yards...

... and .22 barrels do wear out... after many rounds they develop a dull streak on the bottom of the barrel for a few inches from the chamber, progressing down the barrel... and accuracy falls off.

the savage mk 2 is a decent rifle i recently shot a 50 with 4x useing winchester wildcats and a 3-9 trashco scope the only reason it wasnt a 50 5x was because it was at a turkey shoot and i didnt have a 22lr at the time so i borrowed my friends 22 and i didnt know where it was shooting for the first shot but all in all good performing gun i think it would perform beter with match ammo

22 Precision rifle

I built one based on a Brno #4 action which is the same as (similar) to the CZ452 series. I put on a Llija stainless heavy barrel and installed a MacMillan small Sako action varmint stock.

With cheap American Eagle it will shoot 1 hole at 50 meters if I am in a good mood.

I use it for practice at 200 meters and it is still very accurate at that range.

Your idea is a sound one if you just want it for practice and gophers. The barrels last for a zillion rounds and it is cheap to shoot.

I then bought a CZ452 in 17 HMR. Although it was very accurate to 200 meters also, I found that the cost of ammo made it unattractive. I can reload .223 ammo for the same price and have a rifle far more useful. So I sold the 17.

Steve, where do the other four rounds of the five shot group print?

Seriously though, what does your gun agg. using American Eagle? I would sure like to see you shoot some of your zero groups shot with American Eagle at 50 meters.

Most of the rounds go into the close proximity to the first. I have never measured the groups. Most of the time it is just a ragged hole although for 1 5 shot group, the diameter looked one bullet hole. The American Eagle Solids seem to like Brno or CZ actions and firing systems. The 100 and 200 yard groupings are slightly better with ElY or Federal Gold Match but the AE rally performs well in this rifle. Maybe others are different. Steve

22

I have a CZ 452 2E ZKM (heavy barrel) and I wouldn't trade it for anything. New they are about $450. I found mine at P&D in Edmonton. It came with the normal 5 round mag and two extra 10 round mags, A leopold scope with covers. The whole thing was $675 (used). It looked like it had never been fired and the scope was set up so you couldn't open the bolt very well so I don't think anyone ever shot it. I figure the whole thing new would have been $1000.

I can shoot thumb tacs with it zeroed at 50 yards and tight groups at 100 (I've never measured the groups). My girlfriend says she got a gopher in Fernie at 120 last summer. And the best part is 500 rounds of Federal Champion is about 20 (try Canadian Tire outside of the city).

Maybe a .17 would be better if your looking for 200 yards and I've talked to some people that love the .204 ruger (more $ to shoot).

Brno model 3 or 4

Exactly what I was thinking. 28" bull barrell makes it incredibly accurate. Fantastic mauser designed rifle. Old world handcrafted workmanship, finest long gun I own, bar none. Relatively cheap too, you should be able to easily get a nice example for under $500.

Only available used, but keep your eyes on the EE section, they do come up from time to time...

Yeah the BRNO/CZ 452 rifles would be my recommendation also. I have a BRNO 452 sporter barrel and I also have an Anschutz 1411 match rifle. With good ammo the BRNO sporter will almost shoot as well as the 12 pound behemoth Anschutz. My BRNO 452 is a DEADLY gopher gun and I regularly make kills with it past 100 yards with the occasional one out to 200 yards. I bought my BRNO over 20 years ago but if I had to buy another one I would likely get the heavy barrel model though. It likely wouldn't be any more accurate than the sporter barrel BUT the extra weight would make precision shooting a little easier. :)

I've got a cz varmint in .17hmr and it shoots really, really well.....until the wind blows:(. Then I use my anchutz .22 :) I just got a kimber .22, and I have high hopes for it. Comes with a factory target, guarantee's 5 shots in .4", mine shot 5 in .307" with federal gold medal ultra match ammo. I sighted it in at 50 yards a couple weeks ago, I shot 12 shots and got 10in a circle smalller than a quarter.
