I'm getting into this a little late, but I have posted on this topic in past. After hearing Ted's comments on this calibre, I decided
perhaps I needed one. In preparation, I acquired a pretty fair selection of bullets and brands in a variety of weights with the goal of some accuracy testing in mind. From a local site member and friend, I acquired a set of dies, some unprimed Lapua brass and some 285gr PRVI bullets. For a rifle, I opted to go the 
'inexpensive' route and picked up a full wood model M-70 Zastava from Trade-Ex. Granted, the rifle lacks the finish & polish of most other brands out there. However, after seeing the results on paper of my first two handloads, I had NO complaints. With those initial accuracy results using the 285gr PRVI bullets, I haven't yet tried any of the others in my selection available. Also, I contacted Trade-Ex and purchased a 'few' hundred more of the PRVI 285gr. I haven't used it in the field, yet, but it sure performs on paper

I just went down the same rabbit hole too; ordered a husquavarna from Intersurplus that needs only a little help cosmetically (new recoil pad, clean up the wood, and a very small crack at that tang. I also ordered a set of dies, a bag of PPU 285 gr. bullets and a bag of brass. I did not see any ammo when I ordered but they now have some Hornady stuff that seems reasonably priced. Northern precission has PPU for $103.00/ box of 20. Cost of primers and powder will make hand loading about the same price as Hornady ammo. I'm glad I reload.

You & me both. Again, with my first two initial batches of reloads, using the PRVI 285gr with either IMR 4320 and IMR 4064 in my Zastava and 3 shot 100yd groups under 3/4"!!! I have NO complaints. I will, eventually, get around to testing some of the other bullets I've acquired for the "366 Wagner". However, with my results using the PRVI 285gr, I'd be hard pressed to improve on my initial results.

I have some Dominion D4895 SSC; based on how it works in other rifles, I will be starting mid range with the IMR4895 data and working up. It is likely it will be be a compressed load. (this is my go-to for heavy bullets in the 6.5 x 55, loaded to max for accuracy; no pressure signs).
Old thread but time to revieve and bring back the love for this old classiic…. Just bought a 98 swedish mauser from Intersurplus in this old girl,. shes gonna undergo a face lift but the bones are good. Thinking will be my under 200 yard rifle for the bigger critters when huntinng thicker ground….

In this country, unless you are sharing your territory with the great bears, there is no need in my view to carry anything more than a .30-06, the most versatile calibre on the continent except in the areas where the bears occur. Where the bears occur (not talking black bears), you are in dangerous game country. So the question then becomes the same question that gets debated forever in Africa, what to carry to be as prepared as possible in the event of a charge by dangerous game. If you live in dangerous game country in Canada i would absolutely choose to carry a 9.3x62 over a .30-06, based on need, and i would also be extra selective about my choice of bullet for the round. Real world effect? My primary go-to rifle is a .375 H&H (Holland & Holland's response to the 9.3x62) and yes, in outlying circumstances i have absolutely observed the effect on big tough animals over other larger calibres, including one popular big-bore (the .375 being a large medium-bore.) Shooting a whitetail? No. Dead is dead, and a whitetail heart-shot with a .375 is apt to run the same 50 yards it will when shot with a .308.

I agree, that said I live in big bear country and I never felt underguned with a 30-06 on my hands. I do have a 9.3x62 and a 458win mag but I’m not sure I really need them, the resin behind those two was bison hunting but so far I have been really unlucky… this year might be the year!!
Going for four days in the mountains to look for mountain caribou and maybe run into a sone stone sheep… I will be carrying one of my 30-06 most likely my Merkel k5.
My wife will be carrying a 30-06 to!!

Same here, bought a decent one recently. Just needs a bedding job and a new butt pad. Have a pile of Norma 286 gr Plastic point and speer 270gr hot-cors to put to use.

Hunting Moose and Elk in Grizzly country, too many close calls: this is where 9.3 comes in more than handy ... and lived to share the tales amongst my group.

Maybe you're not undergunned for any of the bears you may end up facing. Maybe one day you will find out otherwise, who knows? I'm married to my .375 H&H - ballistics of the .30-06 with twice the terminal impact- so I carry that and never think twice about being prepared calibre-wise. I suspect you could hunt pronghorn or sheep with it loading down to the right bullet with the truly prodigious powder charge it would leave room for. You probably already know the world's record stone sheep was shot with a .404 Jeffery, which is a really oddball gun to carry on a sheep hunt, but who's going to argue with the outcome?! Some PH's in Africa use a .375 H&H for everything, even trusting it to stopping duties, whereas others (most) insist it is not a stopping calibre, although with modern bullet selection they may be underestimating based on yesterday's results. Let's face it, and I live amongst one of the densest populations of big bears i can imagine, if you never went into the woods armed with anything odds are you'd survive. I looked into getting some of the North Fork cup-nose bullets I load with (an expanding solid) in 30 calibre for my '06, but the smallest they seem to offer is 9.3. If i could get those in 30 cal i'd feel better about carring an ought six amongst these bears, i've got super slick '57 pump carbine in the calibre.
Bison, stone sheep, mountain caribou... sounds like living the northwest dream. Those stone sheep seem the most compelling of the three out there to me.
I hear you, I’ve been up hear 30 years and life is good. I would say that the majority of hunters up here( non gun nuts) are carrying 30-06, 300 win mag, 308 win and 338 win mag. Some gun nuts carry a different gun/caliber every time they go out and some tend to carry bigger guns like the 375 h&h but for sur the 30cal calibres are the majority… lots of 6.5cm, 7mm08, 270win are carried in the mountains for sheep and caribou.
Anyway, lots of choices for everyone to choose from.
and that has what to do with my Question to Mitch ?

Jim I like the full collar to butt the barrel tenon on.. there is no collar in the hva much like most current actions.. the other issue is while actions for the hva are readily available, parts are not.. the hva is certainly more turnkey with nice commercial should and safety and the easy button in that regard…but im sitting on allot of parts from Martini so in this instance im not sourcing upgrades.Mitch you prefer a M98 crf action over a HVA crf action ?

My pref is definable CRF in this build and while you know i prefer ZG47 and 21’s they are almost 3x the cost…so …..
