I'm looking to find a suitable replacement for my model 12. She's a fine stick, smooth as silk, and has served me well, however the date code suggests shes getting on in years. (1914) 61### on both barrel and reciever and probably deserves to be treated with more respect than I give her.
So I am looking for the closest next best thing in the way of a bear gun/thunder stick.
I'm thinking marine grade or something that is at least corrosion resistant with the 18" barrel able to handle larger loads. Something that can get scratched and banged up without me moaning about how much it cost when it was new/used.
Or do I just buy a newer model 12 and be done with it?

Just buy a newer Model 12 and be done with it.In my opinion there are a good number of Model 12's out there that are not collector grade shotguns but are great shooters. Many of these not collector grade shotguns are being butchered for their parts are sold off in pieces. It is a case of the parts being worth more than the whole.

You could pick-up a Winchester Model 1200 or a 1300 both are based on the model twelve and offer lots of options, neither are made anymore so used is your only option but they are great guns and I prefer them to any Remington.

The Remington 870 will outlast a model 12. Lots of pump gun trap shooters changed over. The Browning and Ithaca are both good guns but bottom ejection. This wouldn't be a problem for hunting, but trap shooters like to drop one hull in the ejection port without rolling the gun upside down. The Mossbergs have an aluminum receiver, and wouldn't be as durable to thousands of shots, but a lot of hunters like them. The most easily damaged part of the Model 12 is probably the interrupted thread attachment for the magazine to the receiver. The Winchester 1200 and 1300 are a totally different action to the Model 12, they have a rotary bolt head lock up. I really don't know how they stand up to steady use, but the fact they are discontinued is significant. The model 12 just got too expensive to build, but if you really like them, I'll bet you can find a low round count one.

Turkeyslayer: I would highly recomend the 1200 or the 1300, but there is nothing similar between the model 1200/1300 and the model 12 other than the wincheser name and in the case of the 1200 they both have a 1 and 2 in the model.:D

The Remington 870 is still being manufactured, but I do not think many pump gun trap shooters changed over. The only 870 trap that I have seen this year is one that I brought to the range. On the other hand, I can not count how many m-12 trap guns that I have seen on trap ranges this year. The m-12 is now where hear as popular for trap as it once was, but it still has a trap following that the 870 never had.

Remington 870 Express with your choice of barrel. Your old model 12 is a long way from being worn out. They like it rough and ready. But if you want a replacement go for it! Express with vent rib and one choke = 400.00 + a Dlask 18" 3" mag barrel at about 100.00 = a heck of a deal.

there is no replacement for a model 12
if your m12 is a 12 gauge it is a keeper
I believe 1914 was the first production year for 12 gauge.
the first model 12s were in 16 gauge.
i have a spare barrel and some other parts

I can't say that I've seen or heard that statement before. VERY doubtful. The 870 is a stamped & cast cost-cutter gun, made to replace the forged, machined, and hand-fitted Model 31. The Mdl 12 is of the same build quality as the 31.

I will state that a 870 can be kept running longer than a model 12 only because of the vast amount of easily replaced parts. The model 12 will eventually set back the cut in receiver that the breech block locks in. Then it is costly to repair. I think it takes about 2 million rounds for this happen though....

I agree there is just no replacement for a Model12.Although a Remington 870 is getting close.:)

The first Model 12's were 20 gauge.

The 870 is still around and by sheer numbers it is certainly more popular, but in its day, if you bought an 870 or any other pump you were just some guy who couldn't afford a model 12. That is except for the great Dan Orlich!

The old M 12 I have is 1913 mfg. according to the s/n. It is in need of MUCH TLC and a few replacement parts. The old boy who had it supposedly kept a large family fed shooting slugs in a 30' full choked barrel. She's more than just a little loose and the full choke has reversed into a very long barrel "ring". But the price was reasonable:D. Kayceel
