So...FOC was having a sale and on impulse I bought a 16" 6.5 Creed barrel [Criterion, no gas port], with the idea of building it on a MRA Maverick receiver. .

After thinking about it for a while, I'm wondering why I did this. I have a Bergara HMR in 6.5, and I guess I just wanted a second rifle that used the cartridge. However the 6.5 really shines in longer barrels...22" - 24" and 16" would be _really_ short for the cartridge.

Would this be totally pointless? It would just be for casual paper punching...if I ever go hunting I suppose it would be something different to use from my Ruger Scout. Is there anybody else that can see the appeal of this, or did I do something silly?

Please be kind...

Would work just fine out to 400-500yds on deer sized game with a 120 grain Nosler BT or Hornady SST. Keep your impact speed no lower than about 1800FPS and that should be your max.

Nothing pointless about it, definitely not the most efficient use of the cartridge but you're basically a 24" barreled 6.5 Grendel velocity-wise.

Maybe this is your opportunity to experiment with faster powders, see what's possible with that case? Is the twist any different?

(kamlooky's "rich" imagery aside...)

The powders that produce the fastest velocities in a given cartridge apply to all barrel lengths. Shorter barrels won't be faster with a faster powder.

I have a 6 creedmoor with an 18 inch barrel. I shoot the Berger 115 vld hunting, I am getting 2780fps, I wasn't trying for a high speed load. It's by far my favourite rifle, handy light, mild recoil (no brake needed). I made it with the mind set I didn't want to shoot past 300 yards. But I could stretch it out to 400. I have taken moose deer and bear. So, I'd say build it. I also don't really notice the muzzle blast as being that bad. I use h4350

The Sig Cross comes with an 18" barrel, mine is very accurate. Muzzle blast is fine, velocities are about 100fps off book values with the 140's I've been shooting. It also really likes the Sako 156gr factory loads.

I say build it.
