RARE rifles on the EE

I recently purchased a rifle that, while I would not say rare, is uncommon.
Seller did not list it as rare, but priced it a bit on the high side.

I was willing to pay, since this is a hard to find item, and this one is in
very good condition. If it shoots half as good as it looks, I'm happy. Dave :)

I prefer to pay the price of firearms on EE, than to purchase primers, for a buck per primer......... outrageous!

The thing is, if you shop around you can often buy brand new from a gun store for quite a bit less than most EE used prices.

As an example a couple of weeks ago, I bought from a local store a new 10/22 for my grandson...brand new 10/22 sporter walnut stocked/blued for 374.99

I'm very happy with that deal and comes with full warranty! :)

My observation is not about prices. People can ask what they want, and either their stuff will be purchased or it will not, it's a free marketplace here. My observation, as stated earlier, is that lately a lot of firearms are being described as RARE. So if somebody described their stock 10/22 as RARE and asked a thousand bucks for it, chances are nobody would buy it. But I am struggling to understand this apparently sudden desire on the part of some sellers to list their plain vanilla firearms as RARE.

I do use the term "rare" on occasion... my personal definition of rare is one or two runs under 500 total production on a specific "factory" configuration. I do not consider the special order market such as Lipsey's or Gallery of Guns to be "rare," even when it is a 500 piece or less run, due to the preponderance of these runs. However cataloged configurations that were in extremely limited runs, I do consider rare. I have several Ruger rifles that are of under 200 unit runs and one that is from a run of 25... I consider these rare... and RARE should add value, if it is truly rare and truly desirable... the market will set that price.

But to the OP's point... I see lots of common low-end production rifles labeled as "rare," and within my wheelhouse of expertise I have challenged some of those claims, thinking that the seller was simply ill-informed... to date, not one removed the term "rare" when presented with the evidence that this was simply not so... I guess buyers should be armed with good information.

Yep. And if you describe something as rare, I believe you! I also respect your significant experience and knowledge. Interesting that we both want to attribute some of this tendency to ignorance, ie the seller being "ill-informed" as you say, but distressing that somebody would not thank you for your advice and act on it. "It takes all kinds."

Okay, a question for you guys. Looking for opinions on whether it's "rare" or just "uncommon" or if I should just throw it on the EE for a couple hundred to get rid of it.

Winchester 1895 .303 SRC, that has been through restoration by Turnbull in the states?

Yeah, that is not rare, there is one in every closet... I'll take it off your hands for the $200... PM anytime.

Not really...but kind of. Let's be honest Winchester 1895's aren't really rare - you see them in the EE all the time. SRC's are a little more uncommon, but they come up on the EE as well - so not really rare. Now, to have one in .303 that's been through a Turnbull's restoration....I would call it rare. Might be the only one in Canada like it....and trust me IT IS BEAUTIFUL. But the rifle itself isn't that uncommon, or even the caliber.....so what makes it rare.

I will say that I agree with a lot of the earlier posts about people claiming "rare" rifles on the EE lately, but again "rare" is very hard to come up with a solid definition of. It really comes down to each person's individual opinion. A person new to the sport may have a different definition than some of us that have been around for a while and seen them come and go.

Exactly. I see myself rather scouting dealer's web sites then looking for deals on the EE or gp. Was looking for a specific rifle which is between 1 and 1.5K USED. Found one today brand spanking new for $700!

My favourite ads include rare, mint, firm, unfired, scope rings bases sling and bipod not included, no trades, don’t do emt, not willing to ship, and certainly don’t have any pictures…
Pm sent!

My bone to pick is this Pre 64 Winchester anything. Many guns built in the 62,63,64 were built with such poor tolerances due to wore out machinery that they are not real collectibles.
