7x65

The rifle I’m getting, a single shot should be around 6.5 lbs I will most likely try to find a fix 4x or 6x lightweight quality scope amd call it good!

a 2.5-8x36 will offer a little more than a 6x36 or 4x32 just my opinion of course and for not that much extra weight.
in europe for the alps the 2.5-8x36 was the favourite in our group for the smaller sheep we had and the chamois. should work greatly in the yukon.

I have a few 2.5-8 and really like that magnification, that said I really like the fixed power scopes! Will see what I find!

the rimmed cartridge has a reason to exist and you do hope never finding why ...

Not to derail the thread, but you bring up a point that I have long wanted to ask the CGN crowd. Has anyone ever experienced the much-dreaded extractor slipping the rim in modern single shot action (not talking about doubles) that is factory chambered for rimless cartridges? I have shot my share of single shots but I am far from shooting all of them and I have never experienced it (ergo my comment regarding my preference towards rimless).

I run Leupold FXII 4Xs whenever I can (including on my 7x64). If I can't find one or if I have a tough gun to scope (i.e. a barrel mounted falling block without the extension rings) I opt for the M8 4X with the longer tube. I have tried modern(ish) Kahles, Swaro, and S&B fixed power scopes but I always struggle with the weight (too heavy) and the eye relief (too short)...I suppose I might be a combination of picky and a bit antiquated when it comes to my optic choices though.

well i can tell that in our hunting group we had a few kipplauf users. and one had issues with a 270 win with a merkel single break action and another one with a blaser single action in 7mm rem magnum.

i do know that the 7mm user hunted the world with this combo and opened a lot of hunts in russia long time ago. he loved for the bears there but certainly something went wrong in the late life of that specific rifle.
for the 270 win one i do know that he missed a chamois and the case was stuck and did not want to extract.
the gunsmith that was not bubba really never liked the not rimmed cases. i was thinking why and he explained that the extractor may not catch properly the case if not rimmed and may cause issues. not due to overpressure but simply because the extractor/ejector may not catch up properly.

it is a good choice but not unbreakable trust me ...

I had a 243 BRNO K1 that would regularly “slip” the extractor

Rimmed cases are generally easier to remove from break action extractor guns anyways

Besides that for me it just seems “right”.

I appreciate the anecdotes. I guess I will count myself among the lucky ones who have avoided the single shot extractor issue. It sounds like the rimmed cartridge is the risk-adverse choice.

I think it would certainly not be as much of an issue with ejector falling block designs like ruger no 1, but I have only owned one and it was in a rimmed cartridge

I’m sure it also depends on the design of the extractor on break action guns too.

A lot of gun stuff is based on culture and tradition rather than design superiority but I really don’t think it’s the case here.

And as always, style points

I’ve had four Ruger no1 over the years all non rimmed cartridges and never had a problems, 7x57, 30-06, 338winmag, 9.3x62!

not all single shot rifle are farquharson copy or style. i was talking about single break action which are a little different. ruger 1 is a beast but that doesnt mean it may not extract one day or another ...
