I thought since it's 0 degrees and gopher season coming up I would try the M2...to my surprise I had 3 misfires...which I dug out of the snow and then one different weird sounding bang...which blew the bottom off my boyds stock!! Old Hornaday rounds...not good for a semi auto!!!

My local gun shop had an A17 that was replaced because of the same thing. It blew the mag out the bottom and peeled a chunk out of the stock. The replacement was for sale on consignment. I have sold all my Savage firearms other than a walking varmit in 204

I stopped shooting my Savage bolt gun in .17hmr in cold weather because all case neck were splitting, be CCI or Hornady. When above 5-10 c, nothing - all normal.
Nothing to do with the blow out you experienced..

Most manufacturers stopped marketing semi auto 17mach2, and 17hmr rifles, because of this issue.

Ayup! The higher pressure of the .17 rounds, plus the added working of the brass, and you get the odd one does exactly this. I would say that the remainder of that ammo be consigned to the dumpster, or restricted to a bolt gun, if shooting it doesn't freak you out.

Looking at the lengthwise crack in the lower case, gonna suggest that the brass was a crappy batch that made it through Quality Control anyways. Looking at the way the bases separated along the primer/rim crimp, hard brass will fracture when bent too tightly, and I would suggest that was what happened here.

How long ago you buy the ammo? Still got the box? Might be worth contacting the maker, see what they have to say. Worst case, they shrug and claim they have no control, but maybe they will cover you a couple free boxes of shells. I doubt they would cover damages.

Interesting thread. Photos/stories like these remind me of my agonizing decision(s) NOT to buy Marlin 717s when I saw them listed years ago. Stories of OOB discharge, guns blowing up, stocks cracking at the wrist. One seller told me; "as long as you give the chamber a thorough cleaning every 100 rounds-shouldn't have any issues".

Huh?

Wow! I had a cz455 blow the mag out the bottom and it obliterated the brass. It must have been minus 40. Scared the crap out of me. Other then that the rifle was fine I just never attempted that again LOL

^perfect advice

The new A17 Savage is supposed to be a delayed locking bolt which is completely different and is supposed to fix the issues of the past caused by the simple blowback design.
To me, this seems like an ammo issue.
