redfield scope range finder

I have a 4x12redfield with some type of rangefinder in it
does anybody know how this thing works?
if i turn the magnification from 4 to 12 a scale of
distance from 1oo to 600 yds moves.

I haven't used one for about 40 years but if my memoryserves me I think it works this way. There should be two cross hairs fairly close together. Turn the power ring until the cross hairs bracket a deer's chest (approx. 18") then look at the distance scale which will give you the number of yards to the target. I think????
