Hi All,

Starting a new thread on converting a bubbaed Type 81 LMG to a novelty precision cartridge which is 6mm ARC. Will be posting pics and hopefully, range reports, if everything goes as planned

Reasons and inspirations:

- Cartridge itself is fantastic and essentially is a necked-down 6.5 Grendel. I have a bolt rifle built for it on the Ruger American receiver, and it rings steel at 1000yds all day, with the 103-108gr 6mm bullets
- Cartridge performs at about 0.4 MOA or better in the AR platform, with handloads
- Thick-walled LMG receiver
- Bolt face and magazines are essentially the same as 7.62x39, so the whole conversion primarily is a re-barreling, with minor customization of the mags.
- Donor barrels are plentiful - any medium-profile .243 takeoff is good for that, ideal twist is 1-in-10
- I pulled this off with the 6.5 Grendel before, so relevant experience is there
- Because of Brandon Herrera and his .224 Valkyrie, 1000yd AK build :)

So my goals are:

- To have fun building
- To see what accuracy the T81 platform is capable of, given quality barrel and an inherently accurate caliber. If I manage to squeeze 1 MOA with handloads from it, my goal is accomplished

So it begins with the new Tikka takeoff barrel in .243, medium sporter profile. After the 243 chamber is cut off to the shoulders, overall length remains 20"+, N/R. New 6mm chamber is cut in

Two cartridges in comparison: 6mm ARC and 7.62x39

Barrel is ready to press in. It has about the same diameter as the LMG's own

Haven't tried that, but the Grendel works in the AK mags, so should the 6mm ARC - both are 2.26" OAL. Just the follower must be bent a bit, to adjust for no casing taper

Looking forward to seeing how the build goes and how she feeds and cycles rounds! If you can make a type 81 that's good out to 500-1000 meters, I can imagine a bunch of people putting on new barrels

Did that already with Grendel, did not have any impact on the conversion popularity :) Feeds good, shoots good.

Popular common and somewhat obsolete round vs niche uncommon more advanced round.
Unfortunately so. Two years ago the Barnaul steel-cased Grendel was available in the US in bulk at almost the same price as 7.62x39. I wish this was the case here. Amazing round. Price point killed it in Canada

Nice round for sure. I watched your videos. How is the road going down at Oceola right now? It is a nice range, most of the time there are no people there.

Thank you. Trip to Oceola upper range is always a treat - like you mentioned, oftentimes you can have the whole range to yourself and enjoy shooting and the mountains at the same time :) Road is always plowed and in some places is a washboard when there is no snow
