I need a scope! around $1000 limit

Hey all, now I have figured out what gun I want, next is some glass.
I really have no idea about scopes. I was in the gun shop looking at a Burris black diamond, and some Bushnell 4200. Did some reading about Nightforce and Leupold on here but no idea.

Its going on a tikka super varmint 7mm mag. I want a good scope (hunting, target, tactical...). Will be shooting form 100yds and up, maybe 1000 one day. Thinking of about $1000 limit, will go a bit more if needed.

The new (not on the market yet) Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 tactical scope might be exactly what you are looking for. Should be available by the end of April.

You will hear much talk about Bushnells being crap and not worth the money - not reliable, poor warranty service etc, etc, etc. That may be true of the low end Bushnells but I have used the 3200 and 4200 and the older Bausch & Lomb scopes made by Bushnell and found them to be among the best available. Their optics are usually better than the Leupold VXIII scopes. I currently have a number of Leupolds on hunting rifles and a LR Leupold on one of my competition rifles which I like very much however because of it's price advantage and my previous experience with high end Bushnells the new 6500 should be on your short list.

You will also hear that Bushnells don't have enough elevation adjustment to reach 1000yds and that is true for the 3200 & 4200's without special rings or bases. The new Bushnell 6500 will have 93 minutes of elevation, more than enough to reach beyond 1000 yds and more than most other scopes in it's class. It's not that Bushnell doesn't know how to build a top end scope. The old B&L tactical was rated by many to be the best 10x tactical scope in the world for it's reliability, optics and very positive tactile elevation & windage adjustments. It also had an astounding 144 minutes of elevation . The new 6500 will have give you a choice of either a mil-dot or multiX reticle. The 6500 should retail for approx. $900.00

I have a 6500 on order and if it performs as I expect I will probably end up with two or three.
 
I just bought a Zeiss conquest 3-9x40 and let me tell you its awesome. I compared it to the Leupold vxIII and the bushnell 4200 elite's and it blew them away IMO. Best thing is it was only $549 bucks. Well it was $599 but my dealer gave me an extra 50 bucks off. A great scope. Leupold has an unsurpassed reputation for warranties, and from what I heard about Bushnell is that although they do stand behind thier product they have a long turnaround before you get your scope back. Although I couldnt find much info on the Zeiss warranties my dealer told me it was because it was the only scope out of all the ones he's sold that he has never had to send back for warranties.

The Zeiss conquest is very good but it is a hunting scope and he is looking for something that will perform in long range target work, which the conquest can't do well.

The fact that your dealer can't give you good information on the Zeiss warranty would make me very nervous.
 
hahaha I knew that would come up after I wrote it. The thing is that I have never heard anything bad about the Zeiss. Warranty included. I talked to a guide that switched all of his guns over to Zeiss because he said that it was the only scope he has ever owned that he hasnt wrecked in some fashion before. What my dealer told me is that the Zeiss was the only brand of scope that he has ever sold that has never been returned to him for warranty work at all. Not even one.

No argument here on the Zeiss reliability and I have since check their warranty which seems to be excellent - lifetime, transferable and limited?? Whatever limited means?

Although the Conquest 3-9 is no doubt a great hunting scope it is not suitable as a 1000 yd target scope. The Conquest 6.5-20x50 could be used at that distance if combined with 20 m.o.a. rings and or bases as it is somewhat handicapped with only 45 MOA elevation. If they up the power by 10x and double the elevation the Conquest 6.5-20 would llikely be very competative. It retails at approx. $1,100.00
