Not sure if I should post this here or in black powder but here it goes Just got approved for my pair of 1851 navy copies and being I’ve never used black powder firearms before I’m in the dark about where to get components and before you ask yes I did try googling, basically I need to find out the best places in Canada to get percussion caps, powder, wax and lead balls as well as any accessories that might make things easier, also does anyone know if they make like rubber caps for dry fire practice? As always any information is much appreciated

I have never heard of dry firing aids for caplock revolvers.
If perfectly adjusted, the hammer stops on the frame with a slight gap between the hammer face and the nipple. Or, the hammer may strike the nipple. Either way, I would not be dry firing.
I suppose that faux nipples made of something with a bit of resilience could be substituted, but as I mentioned, I've never heard of such a thing being offered.
Heaven only knows if a shop in NFLD has caps and powder for sale. Start phoning.
You should be able to get .375 balls by mail order if you don't wish to cast your own. Same with commercial lubes. You can certainly get by with Crisco.

I dry fire mine using "round caps" designed for "toy cap guns" you wont damage the nipples.
You even get a bang bang LOL

can be used if you cant find the percussion caps as well.

I couldnt find p caps any where.....so I tried these...and "most work" Its tuff to find anymore.
I spoke with a few guys that have used these caps for years.

probably going to want #10 for those. I use cisco over the 375 ball, just fill in the void after seating the ball. I can make .375 balls if you have a problem finding them, drop me a pm. finding Goex and caps can be a problem. you can also try a black powder substitute 777 or the like.

I'd suggest that you check the event calendars of any local clubs to see if they have a black powder group. Get in touch with them, attending one of their events is a good idea, and talk with them about where they source their BP loading supplies.

Have you asked your local gun shops about BP reloading supplies? Their suppliers might have the stuff but they may only order it up as requested. It may not be a big volume sort of deal in your area.

Be prepared for a wait. It's tough to find percussion caps right now.

As for grease over the balls I've been using an alternate option since I started. A drop of Canola oil put into the "V" between the ball and the chamber. It wicks around and gives a nice seal as well as keeping the fouling in the barrel soft for the whole day. And a drop of the same oil applied to the arbor at the front of the cylinder between sets of shots keeps the cylinder rolling free all day as well. It's an idea I picked up from an old YT video when I started. I've shot probably 2000 to 2500 rounds from my C&B revolvers over the last 12 years thanks to using them for my cowboy action events a few times a year. Only ever used that drop of Canola on the balls and never had any issues. It's a different method but it works great.

you can also use wonder wads under the ball as a substitute for lubing chamber mouths. Much cleaner and wonder wads aren't very expensive.

That’s what I use as well. I’ve been getting them from track of the wolf in the US. I’ll have to look around here and see if anyone stocks them.

Unfortunately no stores on the island to my knowledge stock any reloading supplies black powder or otherwise and being a small province there’s not a lot of shooting sports here besides trap shooting and a little bit of IPSC, thanks for the canola oil tip tho it’s nice to hear tips from cowboy action shooters, that’s one of the reasons I got the navy’s was to dabble in cowboy action

Track of the wolf or Dixie gun works for supplies.
Replace the stock nipples with the Dixie stainless ones, the caps fit better and the nipples last.
Marstar has screw sets in stock right now so order a couple of spare sets plus a extra cylinder,
I make my own lube and wads, see first line for wad punches.
Balls are ordered from Ellwood Epps and #11 caps. I have switched from Goex to Swiss powder and find it much cleaner and a bit more powerful, that I get locally as the Hasmat charges are wild for powder.
Shoot a pair of Remington 44's with a Marster loading tool and extra cylinders. Ran through four pounds of powder last summer.
Black power is fun and can be very accurate once you get your powder charge dialed in and loading process consistent.

There’s a store in LewisPort that sells reloading supplies, but I doubt they’re going to have what you’re looking for.
I’m in a similar situation, in the same province.

I’m just going to buy a 45 cylinder, as I already have all the components for 45.
At least I’ll get to shoot it.

If you can find the percussion caps you would also have the option of using Pyrodex or one of the other BP substitutes. It might be easier to find than proper black.

Do not even think about using smokeless of any sort though. That's a good way to blow up the guns and perhaps your hands with them.

Do this apply to a 45 Colt cylinder swap?
