Hey guys I need some advice. I'm buying a lever action and wanna tac it out. In my home town I found a winchester 94 in 30 30 for $1799 and a Marlin 1895 (Remington made) in 45 70 for $1149. I steering towards the win 94. But who doesn't want a marlin in 45 70. But I also read online that the rem made marlins aren't as good as original marlins or ruger made. Any insight would be appreciated.
Also info on website with tac accessories would be cool. Can't find much in canada.

you should decide which caliber you want. 30-30 to 45-70 is a huge difference.

for 1799 is that a miroku win? if so they are expensive but great (I have one)

Also marlin and winchester are very different guns. IMO winchester is cooler , marlin probably better esp if you mount a scope. if you want a slim and small bush gun then also for the winchester

I would avoid a remlin, too many horror stories to even bother

If the sights are on top of the barrel the remlin is probably good. But I wouldn't buy a 45 70 for fun, a 30 30 makes more sense

Rem made marlins had a lot of growing pains, but towards the end of production they were much better than the earlier models.

If you reload, 45-70 has a lot of versatility. You can create loads that would recoil similarly to a 30-30, but you can also create loads that'll shake your fillings loose. If you don't reload then 30-30 makes more sense to me.

Also, if you're interested in 30-30, lots of used Winchester 94s out there. They've been going up in price, but you can still get a pre-64 in good shape for less than a new one will cost.

Your answer may lay in the price of ammo for each cal , especially if you are not a reloader . The 45/70 would certainly be a better buy at 1149 , but the ammo is certainly getting up there in price . Outside of maybe a scope , neither rifle is really the best option for a tactical rifle....think more along the lines of Yellowstone , and Longmire .

30-30 isn't exactly cheap these days either. From what is listed on AmmoBin.ca the cheapest I could thats actually in stock was $41/box, it was $55 for 45/70 which is not an insignificant difference, but it would take 44 boxes to make up the difference in gun prices.

Considering the OP says his home town has 'em in stock, I suggest he goes and has a look over the 45-70 and if it looks good and feels good then buy it. $1149 is a steal, the Ruger-made ones are damn near $2000 these days and ones on the EE are asking $1600-1800++.

And then with the money he saves buying the cheaper of the two guns hes looking at he can get set up to reload if he doesn't already.

Edit - handle the 30-30 while you're there too though. You might just fall in love with it, at which point you'd have to just get both. lol

If you want to add stuff to it. Go marlin 1895 or a 336
Hell even a Henry X model.

I win 94 would be one of my last choices to “Tac”
