I'm looking at buying a bolt-action .308 WIN rifle with a barrel no longer than 20" for range fun and eventually deer hunting.

What's available out there with either a blind/internal magazine or hinged floor plate? I'd rather not have a detachable magazine as I already have a Ruger Scout to fill that need.

Searching through online stores' inventories and even manufacturers' websites, one must read between the lines to figure out if a rifle is equipped with a flush-fitting detachable magazine or a hinged floor plate/internal magazine.

Hinged floor plate for me for sure. My preference for a light compact 308 would be a Win M70 featherweight or featherweight compact. There are lots of good choices out there though.

I would look for a kimber 84, 84L or winchester 70, ruger usually has quality parts but they seem to be put together poorly. In the few ruger rifles that I have had they shot horrible until you shave the internal mag box down to not interfere with the action. Then gotta find the torque for the 3 action screws. Then gotta glass bed everything and properly free float the barrel. I even had to adjust the hinged floor plate to close without rattling. Then find what ammo it likes, it gets to be a pain in the ass if you don't have time for all that work or have to pay someone to do that and extra money in ammo while testing to throw down range just to get it to shoot. The M84 and M70 are already put together properly.

Until you've hunted with a blind mag or floorplate design, you won't know if you like it for your type of hunting.

It's a huge pain for the hunting I do, a flush-fit detachable magazine is greatly preferred. I still like blind mag rifles plenty, but they rarely get used for hunting.

Some cz557 (may still be some in stock at various dealers) have the hinged floor plate. All the 308s built on the standard action I've seen have had the floor plate. Model names include sporter and carbine. There's a sporter on the EE for 800$ now.

The short action cz557s in 308 have had a detachable mag. Submodels would include the range and ranger.

They pop up used fairly often and represent good bang for the buck for a basic push feed firearm.
