Question for fellow Tokarev owners (mine is Romanian): What's your cleaning procedure after shooting corrosive surplus ammo?

I did a field-strip, and soaked the barrel, recoil spring, end-of-barrel retainer thingy (at the front end of the gun), and the whole slide assembly in boiled water. I think it was dumb to soak the slide because water will get into the firing pin mechanism. Sorry for using all the wrong terms, I'm a newbie. Anyway after blowing everything out with compressed air, I ended up cooking the slide assembly at 200F in my toaster oven to evaporate any water that would have entered around the firing pin. There must be a better way!

You over did it.

barrel in the sink with hot soapy water and a bore brush,

Slide wiped down with rag and some hot water. Rinse under the tap with hot water. Hot slide will air dry quickly.

Lube everything when done.

I have a Type-54 I haven't even cleaned after 2400 rounds of mostly Czech surplus. I think I blasted it with some WD-40 and wiped it off a while back around the 1000 mark because a case stuck so bad I had to pound it out. Zero effort otherwise and zero rust. Your climate can play a big part. The corrosive compounds left behind are highly soluble so whatever you do it doesn't need to be extraordinary.

Personally i just field strip, give all the parts a quick sprits with spray solvent, wipe everything down with paper towel (bore brush and wipe the inside barrel) then drip oil (hopps #9) on all the bits, fire control group, spring, slide rails ect, reassemble, run the action a bunch to work the oil in and wipe the extra off the outside. Idk if any of the ammo I shoot is corrosive or not but I do this with pretty much all my guns after range day I find it therapeutic

Wipe all surfaces down with hoppes 9. Check on it in 24 and 48 hrs to make sure you did a good enough job.I do this with the sks as well, never have rust issues.

I field strip it and throw all the bits into an empty spam can full of boiling water and a bit of Balistol, the Balistol emulsifies in water and it gets rid of the corrosive salts and powder fouling while I wipe the slide and frame down with Balistol to get rid of any fouling. Wipe things dry that haven’t dried from the heat of the boiling water, lube and reassemble.

Thanks everyone! Seems I was overdoing it. It will encourage me to take it out shooting more, since the cleaning is easier than I thought. This is my favourite pistol so far!

I mix ballistol and tap water 50/50, spray it in the barrel and slide, soak for 5 mins, and brush off. Wipe clean and lube the thing. works for all my guns after shooting corrosive ammo. Cheap, quick and no rust.
